About the Author

Stan Kirby tied a beach towel around his neck and became Super Commander Beach Boy when he was six years old. When Stan’s not creating the awesome adventures of Captain Awesome, he loves reading comic books, eating okra, and hang gliding (but not at the same time).

George O’Connor is the author and illustrator of the picture books Kapow! and Ker-splash! He spends time in his secret Brooklyn, New York, hideout—where he uses his amazing artistic powers to strike fear in the hearts of bad guys everywhere!

There are lots of chapter books that are full of energy and cheerful silliness, but sometimes they can be so manic and so hyper and so scattered and unfocused that it can be hard for a young reader to actually follow the plot and the action.

While these Captain Awesome books have great characters and a very good humored vibe the greatest appeal of this series to me is that the stories, goofy though they may be, rocket along but are easy to follow every step of the way. Part of this is due to the fact that the books are broken into short chapters. While there is usually some over-arching plotline in the book, the chapters are almost self-contained mini-stories, which makes them manageable.

And the tales are told in a breathless and awesome sort of way. These guys never walk when they can run. They are constantly on the alert for signs of evil doings and they spring into action on every other page. There are no limits to their imaginations, and everything they do is infused with superhero awesomeness.

There are no awkward moments or weird sidetracks; there is no heavy message or agenda beyond encouraging kids to be strong and honest and involved. Good always defeats evil. There is some potty humor, (and lots of dog drool), but not the crude or insistent kind. No one is mean and the kids in the heroes' school class are decent. There is a token mean girl, but she's just a distraction and a running joke. There are real jokes and some funny exchanges that exhibit honest wit and a sly understanding on the author's part of what younger readers like.

The stories are actually supported and enhanced by the drawings which are in tune with the energy and cheerfulness of the writing.

So, a nice set of solid early chapter books with a lot of appeal. I found these in our local e-library and have no connection at all to the author or publisher.

My 1st grade boy enjoys these books. We have a hard time finding early chapter book series geared to boys instead of girls. The set is the first four books of the series in a cardboard box. When the box came it was a little beat up, even in it's plastic wrapper. My reader likes that the books are very adventurous.
