5.0 out of 5 stars The Captain's Lady, A Military Romance May 24, 2011
Format:Paperback
From the first few pages, the author captivated me with Abby and Eric's love story. I liked the navy ship's setting and the diverse characters that Ms. Ekehart presented to us. It was romantic, but at the same time the suspense was drawn out and she mixed the sweet with the salty. Her heroine found her perfect hero and for me, it's why I read romance.

This is one of my favorites and I've read more romance stories than I'll admit to. This story has a bit of everything thrown in. The Captain...he is a wonderfully human and falable man. I'm just finishing up reading it for the second time. I hope there is another in this same vein? I'll have to check that out....
Very good reading and excellent writing. Keep 'um coming.....I'll bet watching for more!
Thank you!

Now onto my review of her debut novel, The Captain's Lady, which is a contemporary military romance that is full of information about the Navy part of the US Army that I learned so many new things just by reading it. The hero of this novel, Captain Eric Hamilton, is a powerful force in the U.S. Navy and even though having earned himself a reputation of being a hard-nosed chauvinist is still a man who commands respect from his fellow officers and staff. He's also the commander of the USS Larsen, a destroyer, currently deployed in the Persian Gulf during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He expects that every officer and staff on his ship to obey his every command though he isn't all that interactive with the female officers and staff since his views of females in the Navy is clear that he thinks they should be housewives. Now for the heroine, Abby Carlton, she has been through so much before she met Eric and it starts when she finally escaped from the man who held her captive for a year. Abducted while travelling in Paris, she was given to an Arab man as a gift, until one night she makes her desperate escape that might have saved her very life. While on patrol one morning Captain Eric Hamilton discovers a dinghy floating aimlessly and that is how Abby is found, battered and in an advanced state of pregnancy, lying in the bottom of the dinghy. From the moment she was laid on the deck of his ship her innocence finds a way to penetrate his hardened heart. But time is running out and Eric is falsely accused of sexual assault while at the same time the CIA wants Abby and the baby for bait to flush out her captor.... Read more ›

I had read another book by this author that I enjoyed--this one was awful! I read on hoping it would get better but it was a waste of time and money.

I am a sucker for love stories. Plot was sort of silly but I love that the hard core military man has a soft side.

Opinion:
Eric describes himself (page 266) "I call the shots, it has to be that way. I'm not a negotiator. It has to be on my terms. I won't change - can't. Can you honestly say you'll be able to live like that? Follow my rules and obey me? No career and be a mother to my children, stay home and raise them? I have cave man ideals and I'll not change." The first thing that crossed my mind was that he ordered others not to talk to Abby about an investigation. It was poor judgment on Eric's part (for spoiler reasons I won't go into). Yet he expects a wife to always obey him without question? He will make mistakes in the future. This didn't sit right for me. I can accept a caveman story at times, but this one didn't work for me.

Major problem: author used vague communication to cause conflict between Eric and Abby more than once. The major separation between them made me angry. Both he and she assumed things that were inaccurate about each other. This was not interesting writing.

The secondary story was Gail filing a false sexual harassment claim against Eric. I would have preferred that the author go more into the Seyed story. That could have been interesting. Seyed kidnapped Abby and wanted her and the baby back. I wanted more details and depth about the kidnapping, her year with Seyed, and what might happen after her rescue by Eric. But that story never gets told.

Data:
Story length: 294 pages. Swearing language: strong. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: 3. Setting: 2004 ship in the Northern Arabian Gulf. Copyright: 2008. Genre: contemporary romance.

More About the Author

2012 was an amazing year in the publishing world for me. And it started with, The Forgotten Child, which landed on the Amazon bestseller list for western romance and romance series. And with the publication of each novel and short story each one made its way to the top 10 for its respective genre. 2013 has seen me posted in the top 100 authors on Amazon for Romantic Suspense and Mystery/Thrillers, Police Procedural.

Where did it all begin? In 2008, I published my first novel, The Captain's Lady, a Contemporary Military Romance through The Wild Rose Press. I have a fierce writing schedule with four books scheduled for release this year and six short stories.

I write three genres, edgy romantic suspense (Walk the Right Road Series), western romance (Finding Love ~ The Outsider Series, and young adult mystery and I warn my readers to expect the unexpected. I'm the mother of three children, one a special needs child. We live on a small Island in the Pacific Northwest where I advocate for the environment, and rights of special needs children. And somewhere in my busy schedule I do find time to write. I encourage you to contact me by email, I do answer every email I receive.
Stay tuned. There is more to come from Walk the Right Road Series and Finding Love ~ The Outsider Series.

And to my readers and all of you who have shared my stories with your family and friends, a big heartfelt thank you.Email: Lorhainne@LorhainneEckhart.com
