After being on the program for two months I've been able to trim the fat while maintaining my lean body mass, which seems to be "impossible" for other weight loss methods. I'm still working my way down into a healthy body fat percentage, but if this rate continues I'll be there well before the 6 month maximum that Kiefer suggests.

The book is an easy read and refreshingly blunt with regards to how other diets fail to work, while presenting solid evidence to support his view. Even if you're not dieting it provides a good explanation about how differently the body processes carbohydrates, fat, and protein. The first 150 pages or so describe the system, and the remaining majority of the book consists of recipes, meal plans, and snack ideas that compliment the ultra-low-carb diet.

I was directly approached to provide continuing feedback on my success with the diet, so here are my current thoughts:

I'm not one to usually be overly hyperbolic, but discovery and implementation of the Carb Nite solution is quite possibly the most important thing I've ever done. I went from around 32% body fat percentage to 18% within the recommended 6 month period. I'm now on my second cycle and am on track to be under 15% by year's end. I've also had several friends and family members use the protocol with tremendous results as well. I'm in better shape now in my early thirties than I ever was in my twenties, as it's set me on a good healthy body path.

It does require tremendous discipline, but I regard that as a strength of the diet - it's easy not to cheat whenever you know the consequences are a full 10-day reset of your diet cycle, and the built-in weekly "cheat" can be used to eat whatever you desire.

First of all a little background on me I have tried low carb diets in the past, some have worked a little then I would stall out and stop while others were easier to maintain but just reintroduced carbs and then I would stall. I stepped on a scale recently and was not happy with what I saw. I decided to go on the Carb Nite solution at the advise of a friend because he was on it and was happy with the results. I've only been on the diet since end of November 2012, the Monday after turkey day as a matter of fact. So far I have lost an astonishing 52lbs, when I started I tipped the scales at 346 lbs and as of this writing I weigh 294lbs. The first few days of ULC diets are pretty rough but so far I feel better than I have in a very long time and I have more energy as well.

I don't work out but I do have a job that keeps me an the go quite a bit, however I would like to start working out to build some lean muscle and help my body burn more fat. I stopped drinking alcohol and don't drink any diet sodas or have any artificial sweeteners, I stay away from anything processed and try to follow the book to the letter. I have also started taking vitamins and supplements along with the diet. Following the books advice I don't eat in the mornings usually for about 10-12 hours after my last meal. Instead I have a cup of coffee with some heavy cream, coconut oil and a tablespoon of almond nut butter. That tends to stave off any hunger pains and keep me mentally sharp as well as my fat burning going.

The diet has been fantastic it one of the easiest and most satisfying ones I have ever tried. The book goes into detail about why you should do certain things and why you shouldn't so it makes it easier to understand and stick with.

OK....carb nite solution.....great idea. As in it works great. Lost a lot of weight already doing this and seems to be the missing link with regard to what actually works for weight loss. This, all by itself, including the documentation as to why this happens, earns the book five stars.

What I don't like about the book. It's padded. The actual diet can be described on a single page. The documentation of the science behind it takes up another ten to twenty pages. Another hundred pages ramble on about various failed approaches to diet and why they fail....that is OK, but the author spends way too much time on that and really isn't necessary to understand either the diet or why it works. Unacceptable is the number of recipes which take up the rest of a rather long book. Yeah......eating this way is simple and doesn't need much in the way of recipes. Six days out of seven, you eat meat, the fattier the cuts of meat the better. The last day is your carb night. This book could have used a detailed discussion and maybe recipes on how to get your carbs in a healthy way.

Which brings up my main complaint. I have diabetes. Carb nite for me requires some care and much more to do safely than the author provides. I highly recommend any diabetic carefully monitor carb nite with their glucose monitor. The 140/120 rule applies. Eat whatever you like as long as whatever you eat, your blood sugar is below 140 an hour later and below 120 two hours later. The issue very much is one that diabetic damage starts to take place any time your blood sugar is above 140 more than a couple of hours. And what that means specifically for a diabetic just isn't predictable. The only way to know for certain is to test.
