Editorial Reviews

Rock legends KISS were the first signing to the late Neil Bogart's newly formed Casablanca Records label after he saw and recognized their talent and showmanship during their spectacular performance at a showcase concert at New York City's Le Tang's Ballet Studio in 1973, offering them a contract on the spot. Now, KISS celebrates their 40th anniversary in 2013 having broken box-office records set by The Beatles and Elvis, more than 28 U.S. gold albums the most gold records for any American rock band 40 million sales in the U.S. and a total exceeding 100 million worldwide.

In their early years, KISS released a total of 29 singles on seven-inch 45 RPM records for the Casablanca label. These were available for sale to the public, used for commercial radio airplay and to promote album sales. Many of these singles had entirely different mixes, edits and material that didn't appear on their vinyl albums. Now for the first time, these musical snapshots of KISS formative years, which have never been available in a commemorative singles edition, will be released in a box-set entitled The Casablanca Singles 1974-1982 from Mercury/Casablanca/UMe.

In typical KISS fashion, these are no ordinary boxes. The sets are housed in a beautiful die-cut shadow box with a limited edition, etched silver metal plate and ribbon-pull magnetic closure, custom KISS 45s box with 26 collectible picture sleeves from original single releases around the world, including Japan, Germany, Holland, Spain and Britain. Also included is a booklet which tracks the genesis and chart history of each single represented in the package and four individual KISS masks.

The Casablanca Singles 1974-1982 covers KISS' remarkable eight-year stay on Bogart's label, from their very first single "Nothin to Lose" b/w "Love Theme from KISS," from their self-titled debut, to their very first charted 45, "Kissin' Time." The band's subsequent string of hits included Dressed to Kill's live version of "Rock and Roll All Nite" (No. 12 on Billboard's Hot 100), Destroyer's "Shout It Out Loud" (No. 31) and the Top 10 ballad "Beth," Rock and Roll Over's "Hard Luck Woman" (No. 15) and "Calling Dr. Love" (No. 16), Love Gun's "Christeen Sixteen" (No. 25), Ace Frehley's solo hit, "New York Groove" (No. 13) and Dynasty's "I Was Made for Lovin' You" (No. 11).

"Even I haven't heard some of this stuff, but this is all part of our master plan to celebrate KISS at this milestone in our careers," says Gene Simmons. "This box set represents us at the very beginning of our career, and documents the band's early success and subsequent growth."

Adds Paul Stanley: "This collection is meant for the true KISS aficionado. The packaging really captures the development of both our music and image at a very crucial period in the band's history."

The special set comes out after the release of Monster, their 20th studio album. Showing the band at the top of its game, Monster embodies all that is KISS and the music that first inspired them to pick up their guitars and flame-throwers and don makeup to entertain millions. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, with longtime members guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer, return stronger than ever with their new album to continue the legacy of the spectacular larger-than-life extravaganza known as KISS.

I've dreamt that one day KISS would do just this: compile all the Casablanca singles into one set.
The edits/different mixes are a must-have for the KISS fanatic. The only thing missing that I would have liked are the Japanese Talk To Me/Easy As It Seems single,I/Only You single,The Oath/Escape From The Island single & I'm A Legend Tonight/Love Gun(remix)single. I'm aware that they are only compiling the North American release singles & not ones exclusive to other countries. It just would've been even greater with the addition of these as well!
Overall, excellent packaging with attention to detail. An amazing addition to a KISS fanatic's collection...

If you are a KISS fan or a KISS collector, buy it, the package is great the box is beautiful, no new songs, some different versions, but I recommend that this is for fans only, I as a fan really loved it, there are some fans that have turned bitter against the band, but KISS has always been Gene and Paul really, but still this is great for collectors.

This box set offers us old-school fans the opportunity to acquire those special single versions of songs we only had on vinyl or maybe could never acquire due to them being foreign versions.

Fast delivery from the US of A to the UK too - full credit!

There are several songs that are remixed and edited for radio or other reasons. I actually have all the remixes on their original 45 RPM's from back in the day so I bought the CD version for the quality sound for transfer to my ipod. DRC, Dr Love and Strutter 78 make it all worth it but check out See you in your Dreams from Gene's solo or Dirty Livin. They are different. Hard Times has a different ending. Shout it out loud fades out at the end. The singles are sometime far more interesting then their album counterparts. Getting the masks was cool, reminded me of the posters in the solo albums or the Love Gun "BANG" insert. Felt like getting a KISS album from the good ol days. I have been waiting for this set for a long time. If you love KISS it is a must have collection. It's all KISS, back when it really was KISS. No Tomfoolery here. The picture sleeves are awesome too. I give it 1111976 thumbs up.

I give this 5 stars because I am a big fan and these are some pretty awesome sleeves. I'm a sucker for vinyl as well. The idea of this on CD is just stupid. What a waste of 29 CD's that could all be combined into a two disc set. As cool as I think this set is, I simply would never pay $300 for it. Amazon charged me $157 at the time and I still consider that about $57 too much. KISS is notorious for pricing folks out of the market on most of their merchandise but they can do so because there will always be someone (like me) who is willing to buy it.

Overall, amazing set in very sturdy packaging. Way overpriced and not worth nearly what the current asking price is. Buyer beware.

Although mostly a reissue of already relaeased material, the Casablanca Singles does offer some rare single edits yet to be released oficially until now, in novel sleeve replicas. Some additional material as a bonus may have made the package a more attractive and worthwhile deal, but it does stand a s a great buy as it is, for die-hard fans. I hope to see a further volume of the Mercury Singles perhaps...?

I bought the vinyl set. It really came down in price since last year. If there are any left I would highly recommend it for any fan. The packaging is great and a lot of the mixes are a little different than the album versions. The solo album singles are all colored vinyl corresponding to each member, purple, blue, etc.

vinyl box?
I am with J. Walsh in his previous message. The cost far outweighs what you are getting and I am a huge collector of anything KISS. I have probably almost as much as Gene himself but I am getting very tired of the costs of the merchandise, even if I can afford it, it makes me feel like a sucker... Read More
