Book Description

Tom Carney never thought much about death until it happened. After his face hits the floor and his world fades to black, he opens his eyes in a cramped apartment overlooking the mist-shrouded streets of Afterlife, walks downstairs and enters Afterlife Investigations, a detective agency for dead people with issues. Polly, the agency’s sublimely efficient secretary, hands him his sheet of rules (…never materialize before a living person…never speak directly to a living person…) and tells him in no uncertain terms that he is the new principal investigator. He can't get out of Afterlife until he helps the other unfortunate souls stuck there with him. Considering his limited options, he takes the job.

Fortunately, he has help. Finus, his living contact, navigates for him through the material world, handling the tasks which Tom, as a spirit, cannot do. From the other side, he is aided by Mickey, a former but not reformed poltergeist who tends the only bar in Afterlife, by Bob, a crazy old man who spouts advice in song lyrics and by the repo men who ferry him back and forth to the living world.

When beautiful Charlene MacKenzie, the first Mrs. MacKenzie, glides into the agency seeking vengeance for her murder, she knows just who did it...Elena, the second Mrs. MacKenzie. Tom soon learns that to solve her case he’ll have to solve the Elena paradox—how one woman can be ageless and seductive among the living and at the same time catatonic in a dreary apartment in Afterlife. He discovers a phantom child is the key to unmasking an entity neither living nor dead would wish to meet.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Ms Wolfe deserves an award for sheer imagination in this quirky novel. I enjoyed this supernatural romp that will keep me thinking about it for a long time to come. With any luck Ms Wolfe will be considering a sequel because I surely haven't had enough of Tom Carney." - Reviewed by Susan R for Readers Favorite

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Supernatural Mystery May 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The afterlife world of Thomas Carney is mysterious yet familiar, a place I never imagined but completely accept as real. Cleo Wolfe populates her story with quirky, multi-dimensional characters that I want to get to know better. The tone of this smart mystery is traditional and at the same time very modern, with humor and heart that kept me turning the pages. I'm going to compare it to my favorite Hitchcock movie, "Shadow of a Doubt" for its overall feeling: the ordinariness of this world is intimately detailed, and the extraordinary events are vivid and nightmarish. I hope this is just the beginning of a long series, I'm hooked.

I received this review copy in Word Document form, and converted it to mobi for my Kindle. I found no formatting errors in the converted copy, but downloaded the sample from Amazon to verify the quality of the unconverted mobi file. When it comes to picking books to read I am often guilty of buying on a whim. I hardly ever take each detail into account, so the impulse is usually based on one thing that catches my eye or snags my interest. It was the title that attracted me to this book and I am glad it did.
It is a great little supernatural gem. The idea of a bus station like detective agency to solve the problems of the not yet passed over, while the Chosen one has to wait for their time to go on to higher things or not, is a surprisingly good one. It is an original concept and one that works well with the characters that Wolfe has created. To top it all off the Carney and his group of bar/pub friends have to contend with creatures that should be deep in the Underworld. I enjoyed it and recommend you give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read, Your gonna Love It! October 15, 2011

Format:Paperback
An interesting take on afterlife.

It's a glimpse of the ghost world with an intriguing story that allows ones imagination to not only see the day to day life of ghosts but also a glimpse of some ghosts moving on and those patiently waiting for what could be forever. You also learn there are limits for the abilities ghost have in the afterlife, and the adjustments one has to make after going to this realm.

It's a wonderful time of year for this book, as it has a few goblins more accurately called a "She Devil" which the word Wicked fits her perfectly.

You will see friendships developed, and those friendships become very protective of their own, they step up to protect what's right against evil.
