About the Author

H.L. Stephens is a mystery/fantasy writer who wakes up every morning at the crack of dawn in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia with a giant cup of girlie coffee & her ten pound Pomeranian named Peanut Pumpkin Pie. She loves writing in her pajamas, regardless of the time of day, & thinks “jammies” should be added as official ‘casual Friday’ dress wear.

More About the Author

H.L. Stephens grew up in beautiful Charleston, SC with its wild marshlands and pristine white beaches as the backdrop of her many childhood adventures. Growing up in a military family, Stephens had the benefit of meeting people from all over the world who shared the richness of their cultural diversity with her from the time she was a little girl. Exposure to such a variety of different people and places helped to inspire her imagination and nurture her desire to create new and fantastic realms for others to explore.

Stephens currently heralds from the Appalachian Mountains and fills her days working as a consultant and functional designer for a software company near her home. In her spare time, however, she is dedicated to the stories she weaves together for her readers. Writing in a variety of genres from mystery to science fiction to fantasy, Stephens continues to discover the possibilities of new and exciting places in the worlds she creates.

Stephens is proudly owned by a 10 pound Pomeranian named Peanut Pumpkin Pie who is her constant companion and writing partner. "I have always had pets throughout my life, but in so many ways, it is like Peanut is the better half of my heart. For me, the perfect day is a day spent in my jammie pants with my little girl, a cup of girlie coffee, and my writing journal."

In February 2013, Stephens lost the first great love of her life, Sir Happy Heart, the miniature dachshund who was the real-life inspiration for the Sir Happy Heart character in her Chronicles of Mister Marmee series. She continues to write his novels as a tribute to the memory of a dog that was as grand in life and spirit as the character in her novels.

Stephens is currently working on her third novel and the first in a new fantasy adventure series. The Journey to the Darken Realms is due for release in the summer of 2014.

This is a lovely, engrossing read! The language and style will transport you to Victorian London, but the emotions and sentiments that resonate on each page are totally eternal and contemporary ---just like the human spirit.
H.L. Stephens does a wonderful job of keeping the suspense and mystery alive. The unveiling of each piece of information through the eyes of Mister Marmee and his dear friend is delightful in itself, but the transitions to understanding the situation from the human standpoint are even more engrossing.
Overall, it is a thoroughly enjoyable page turner! I can't wait to read successive stories in this wonderful chronicle!

A absolute pleasure to read!!! A classic "who done it" with a twist! Stephens has built believable characters by intertwining beautifully written fantasy with the real life characteristics and behaviors of the pets we all love. There is far more happening in the hearts and minds of the animals around us than we ever knew - until now!!!

With the Victorian feel of a Sherlock Holmes mystery and the perspective of Mr. Marmee, a delightful feline and the Detective skills of Mr. Happy, a wise and Loyal Dachshund with plenty of spirit and pluck this page turner was a delight. I could not put it down and did not want it to end. That to me is the best way for a story to be.I loved it and it will stay on my Kindle to read again and again. Don't miss this Gem!The Case of Jack the Nipper ~ A Chronicle of Mister Marmee (The Chronicles of Mister Marmee)

What a pleasure to read a well-written, literate mystery, unlike so many released these days.
Plus, it is really a mystery and not a romance novel trying to pass as a mystery, as so many do lately.
The case is a particularly vicious one investigated by gentlecat Mister Marmee and an intelligent dachshund, Sir Happy, who mentors Mister Marmee in detection. The gentlecat narrates.
A life-threatening assault of Sir Happy's human companion offers an account of the bond of love between animal and human as touching as any ever written.
I was fortunate to read this excellent book with my wonderful dachshunds - a black and tan, a chocolate and tan, a black and tan pibald - surrounding me in their after-dinner snoozes late into the night.
Condolences to the author for the loss of her Sir Happy.

If you love animals and enjoy mysteries, you should enjoy this tale of the dog and cat detectives. Reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes,it still has a unique and quirky charm of its own.

I have this on my NOOK, and absolutely love it! It is a delightful book with characters I wanted to invite into my home and heart. I simply could not put it down until I had finished it. I have not had the opportunity to read it again, as everyone wants to borrow it. I cannot wait for the second book to come out. Do yourself a favor, and get this book. You will not be disappointed.
