Jillian Hart had just returned home to Mercy, South Carolina after selling her wares at several craft fairs and cat shows. It was a tiring, but relaxing venture because she seemed to attract corpses like rugs attract lint and she needed a breather. Evie Preston was the third one she'd found and if that kept up she'd have to open up a funeral parlor instead of sewing cat quilts. There was one thing she'd been happy to attract and that was Tom Stewart, the owner of the security company who installed her cat cam. Jillian liked to keep an eye on her three cats, Syrah, Merlot, and Chablis when she wasn't at home. She would have liked to have had it aimed at Tom because somehow he'd mysteriously disappeared.

Jillian wracked her brains to figure out what went wrong. Had she done something to turn him off? He wasn't even returning her calls. She'd considered calling his mother, but she was an "odd bird" at best and when she saw a car in Tom's driveway she decided to stop. "I'm not scary, am I? `Cause you look like your panty hose are quivering," a strange man declared when he opened the door. Turns out the wisecracking jerk was Tom's half brother, Bob. Duh huh! There would be a lot of people coming out of the woodwork like termites rushing for cover after the exterminator shows up, including an ex-wife named Hilary and boy name Finnian, Finn for short.

It didn't take Jillian long to figure out that something was terribly wrong after Tom came back looking something like the cat dragged in. She was going to tell him that brother Bob had let his diabetic cat Dashiell loose, but when she saw his battered, bruised, and cut face she knew it could wait. Her household would soon be upended. Tom's stepson, Finn, would be moving in with Jillian.

Leann Sweeney is a master at making readers care about her characters. Time spent with them is an absolutely joy. Jillian and her beloved cats Merlot, Syrah and Chablis are at the top of the list of my favorite cozy characters. In this fourth book in the series, we learn so much about Tom and his dysfunctional family. My heart went out to Finn...so much pain and neglect in his life yet he has turned out to be such a great kid. He and Yoshi make the cutest team! Seeing how they integrate themselves into Jillian and Tom's relationship will be a treat.

This book is also extra special to me because of Tom's cat Dashiell. He's right at the center of the action in Jillian's latest adventure, and I loved the way Leann dropped into the story tidbits about the extra care and attention a diabetic cat requires. She's an expert on the topic as well, as her beloved cat Agatha is diabetic. Leann has been there for me to pick her brain over the past several months as I've adjusted to life with my sugar kitty Tara.

This series just keeps getting better and better, and book #5 can't come fast enough for this reader!!!

Jillian Hart returns from a long traveling craft show, where she sells her cat/pet quilts, and just 'knows' something is wrong with her boyfriend, Tom.

Never dismiss a woman's instinct as Jillian is proven quite correct. Not only is Tom in trouble but persons in Tom's past come out and cause pain, mayhem and murder in his current life and Jillian's. There is a new character, Finn and his dog, Yoshi that just makes you want to protect and nurture.

This was a complex murder mystery. Very gentle in it's approach as is the style of Jillian. There were laugh scenes and sad scenes. There was even some scary scenes.

All in all this was a good solid cozy murder mystery and I enjoyed the interaction of Merlot and Yoshi a great deal. Not to mention, Tom and Jillian's relationship.

I look forward to the next episode.

The Cats in Trouble series is fast becoming one of my favorites. I just spent a cozy afternoon snuggled under a quilt with my cats while I devoured "The Cat, the Wife and the Weapon" (and a few brownies).

Though quilting takes a back seat in this book, cats are still very much at the forefront, along with a devoted dog, as the humans sort out relationships and and a murder or two.

Every book contains a cat problem of some sort - this time diabetes - but the issues fit nicely into the plot so you don't feel the author has switched from story-telling to lecture mode. A true cozy, it has no graphic violence, sex, or language. It does have humor and romance.

I hope we don't have to wait too long for the next book in the series.

If you love cats, or if you enjoy a good mystery, this series is for you. My husband suggested I try this author when he saw some of her books posted on the internet. I was quickly hooked. I read all the Jillian Hart cat series in the order of their release, ending up with this book, her latest release. I must say I enjoyed them all, but in my opinion the books seemed to get better as they went along. The Cat, The Wife And The Weapon is now my favorite until they next Cats in Trouble mystery is released. I, for one, can't wait.

After a successful trip selling her crafted quilts, Jillian Hart was looking forward to reuniting back in South Carolina with Tom Stewart, a security expert and the man who has come to mean the most in her life. Unable to reach him by phone, she is highly disturbed when she drives to his home and discovers not Tom but a man claiming to be his brother. This is surprising not only because Tom had not mentioned that his brother was visiting but mostly because Tom had never mentioned that he even had a brother. Just as upsetting is how the uncomfortably flirty Bob callously allowed Tom's diabetic cat to escape, leading to its near death.

After leaving to rescue the helpless feline Jillian soon discovers that Tom has hidden from her a plethora of family secrets, including a former wife, his former police partner who betrayed both the badge and Tom's marriage, and a stepston who ran away to find solace with him. When the brutal ex-con ex-cop who married Tom's ex-wife turns up dead in Tom's car, the police focus on the two most obvious suspects who hated the man.

Considering the duplicity and betrayal between humans who are supposed to love one another, it's no surprise that Jillian finds solace and comfort with her three beloved cats. They do not solve crimes, they don't provide clues, and their whiskers do not allow them to communicate with people, but they do permit Jillian to lower her protectiveness over her emotions and be vulnerable to love.

What I enjoy about the books by Sweeney is how she fully develops her characters and prevents them from being chariactures. There are both good cops who are friends and cops who look for the easy answers.

More About the Author

I have been writing for more than twenty years and feel very lucky to have become a career writer. Many times I worked my day job as a nurse, wife and mom and then wrote well into the night. My books are "gentle mysteries" and my towns are populated with people I'd like to meet. Not that I "like" all those characters, I'd just like to meet them. There will be justice in the end and no animal will ever be harmed, only rescued. I hope you can escape into one of my stories.
