Review

"Called, but not yet equipped." Now there's a phrase I can relate to. That's how my friend Brad Lomenick describes his initiation into the world of leadership. Little did he know that his discipline and faithfulness would eventually land him in a role that would give him the opportunity to influence tens of thousands of emerging leaders in the U.S. and around the world. The Catalyst Leader is a must-read for next-gen leaders who want to start strong, end strong, and change their worlds along the way.
--Andy Stanley, Senior Pastor, North Point Ministries

Brad has captured some of the most elusive and fundamental lessons of leadership in a readable and actionable way.  Any hungry leader will find plenty to chew on here!
-- Patrick Lencioni, president, The Table Group; best selling author, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team and The Advantage

I've seen and experienced the Catalyst leadership and Brad in action and up close. It's the real deal, and so is this book. We need a new generation of change makers, and The Catalyst Leader outlines the keys for making a difference now.
-- Mark Burnett, award winning executive producer and creator of The Voice, Survivor, Apprentice and Shark Tank

Brad Lomenick has dedicated himself to a noble quest: helping young people become great leaders.  There is no better path to social improvement than deploying legions of exceptional leaders into teeth of our most-pressing problems, all the better if they're young enough to be undaunted, with decades of opportunity for contribution ahead of them."
-- Jim Collins, author of Good to Great

This is the fastest-moving, most exciting time in the history of business. Incredible opportunities are flying past us at breakneck speed, and once they're gone, they're gone. If you don't have the spiritual and emotional foundation for growing as a leader, those opportunities will roll right over you. Brad Lomenick has become a master at preparing young leaders for the opportunities and challenges they'll face. I'm fired up that he's poured everything he's learned about growing leaders into this book.
--Dave Ramsey, New York Times best-selling author and nationally syndicated radio show host

For more than a decade, Brad Lomenick has led Catalyst, the premier leadership brand for young Christian leaders. He's finally distilled his 20+ years of leadership experience and his time at the helm of Catalyst into a simple, accessible and straight-forward guide to what it takes to be a next-generation leader.

What are the 8 essentials of a Catalyst Leader?
According to Brad, anyone who wants to lead must cultivate eight essential skills and traits. They are:

Calling: discover God's unique calling on your life
Authenticity: embrace your true identity and share it with others
Passion: develop an insatiable hunger for a vibrant relationship with God
Capable: chase after a level of excellence that will stretch you and astonish others
Courageous: learn to push through fear and take risks
Principled: root yourself in unchanging principles rather than shifting circumstances
Hopeful: create and cast a compelling vision for the future
Collaborative: build bridges with others for the purpose of learning and cooperating

Brad devotes a chapter to each of these essentials. He clearly defines each, then illustrates how challenging cultivating each of these qualities can be by using stories from his own life. Next, Brad tells story after story of leaders who embody this quality.

Each chapter also includes lots of questions and conversation starters to help you think through each of these qualities, along with some clear next steps.

Catalyst Leader's greatest strength is that it is very practical. If you're looking for an immediately applicable, accessible leadership book, look no further.

I really did want to like this...I've heard great things about the Catalyst conference, and I think Brad and his staff are totally doing important work for raising up leaders, especially in the Christian context.

However, I couldn't force myself to finish the book--I'm sure Brad and the whole Catalyst team have great hearts and are great people, so this isn't a judgment on them. With that said, I felt like the book was 90% about how awesome the Catalyst team was and the cool things Brad has done, and 10% principles that I could apply. I understand being proud of your organization (why wouldn't they be?), but constant name-dropping and a tone of "isn't Catalyst the best?" took away from the heart of the book, in my opinion. I would have liked to see him talk more at length of the leaders and their stories in the back of each chapter, instead of briefly mentioning them in a few sentences.

I'm glad others loved the book, but I feel like there might be more effective, leadership books out there (i.e. Good to Great by Collins)!

Sit down and enjoy over 180 pages of Brad telling you great stories about Brad. You know why you should be humble? Because Brad made the President laugh by mentioning his jump shot instead of talking about himself... Revolutionary! Oh, and guess who gave him directions to the White House? The Olsteens!!!

I LOVE Catalyst, but this book isn't about leadership, it's about ego.

While not a household name, Brad Lomenick is an influencer of influencers.

In 'The Catalyst Leader,' Brad takes you behind the curtain of Catalyst, the leadership movement he leads, and into his own life, revealing personal failures and insecurities. He is also a great connector. In each chapter Brad introduces you to change makers he personally admires and knows, many of whom, if you follow them, will continue to inspire you long after you've finished the book. As a gifted question asker, Brad holds up a mirror for you to reflect on your own leadership journey and I was personally floored by what I saw.

Having listened to all 200+ Catalyst podcasts to date and having met Brad in person at Catalyst events, I was already a Lomenick fan. 'The Catalyst Leader' only deepened my respect for him. The "Brad" on the pages is the same man you'll meet in person.

'The Catalyst Leader' is one of the top leadership books I've read and I only wish that it had existed when I was 18 years old.

If you feel passionate to lead and don't feel like you've arrived yet, don't hesitate to buy this book and get a few copies for those you want to pour into.

Brad is clearly a successful leader. He has learned many valuable lessons and shares them in this book. However, he could have saved us all a bunch of time if he had left out the self-promotion. Be prepared to wade through endless stories about Catalyst.

Brad does a great job telling his story and inspiring other leaders. A bit thick on examples, but not light on practical content.
As a follower of Jesus who is from a similar cultural / faith background as the author it was easy for me to engage with the text. If one didn't have that in common with him it may feel a bit scattered or faith heavy.

Solid recommendation to young, faith oriented leaders in any discipline.

I read many blogs. Yes, I'm that guy. And yes, that is a humble brag. With all the blogs I read, there are only a select few that I find myself reading nearly every post. Brad Lomenick's blog is one of them. When I found out his new book The Catalyst Leader was coming out, I knew right away that it was one I wanted to read! I am very grateful to Brad and Catalyst for allowing me to read and review this book for free! It was definitely a blessing.

Let me tell you this, The Catalyst Leader exceeded my expectation.

Brad's wisdom from his years of leading shine through to any type of leader who may be reading: pastor, minister, business owner, teacher, blogger, corporate executive, etc. You will want to buy a copy of this book, read it, and keep it on your shelf within arms length.

Know this, The Catalyst Leader is a spiritual leadership book. It is not an exegesis of Scripture, but the principles that Brad discusses are all found within Scripture, and he does not shy away from pointing this out. I like this! The principles of leadership he discusses are; a leader has a calling, a leader is authentic, a leader is passionate, a leader is capable, a leader is courageous, a leader is principled, a leader is hopeful, and a leader collaborates. Inside each chapter, Brad breaks down each principle giving helpful, deeper insights. He also sprinkles in helpful illustrations from his own personal experience and others he has learned from others. Then at the end of each chapter, Brad humbly points you to other leaders who practice each quality. As you read, you will find helpful tweets and Facebook post suggestions for you to send out to inspire others.

In my opinion, Brad has hit a home run with this book. His insights are powerful. His humility is displayed.
