Am e-reading Fred Kaplan's "The Insurgents" currently (on my Kindle Fire HD), learning of the influential role of Larteguy's "The Centurian's" on a young David Petraeus. Searching in Amazon, however, I see that it is not available as either Kindle Single or ebook. Any plans to do so? If not, I ask that Amazon take it under consideration to resurrect and re-publish this still influential work of about 40+ years age. Thanks in advance - Steve D.

Format: Hardcover
The Centurions tells the story of a group of French officers and NonComs at the time of the slow motion collapse of the French post World War II empire in Indochina and Algeria. The writing is excellent, the characters deeply observed and developed. As a reader, you can feel the anguish in the choices these men, and women, were all but forced to make for honor and country. In a sentence, this is one of the great war novels, as well as one of the best novels of the twentieth century. Reading this now, when vampire novels written by twelve years olds (mentally speaking), and books about zombies and school boy fantasies about demons dominate the literary landscape, is like stumbling into an unheralded paradise. What a breath of fresh air: a mature and serious novel, about something that really matters. Larteguy (who died in 2011) is must reading for anyone who wants to understand terrorism and the all but intractable difficulties facing western democracies in their efforts to put an end to it.

I also read this book as a teenager and during the beginning of USA involvement in Viet Nam, taking over where the French left off...i have never forgotten this book and have been searching for an affordable copy of it for years.
It is a masterpiece of political stupidity carried out by the warriors who have real loyalty to each other.
Please reprint this book or make it available in digital form so I can read it again many times.

Algerian War - Lessons

Jean Larteguy's classic novel "The Centurions" is about Indochina and the Algerian war-the first in his series of novels-should be required reading for officers and is fan to read besides. The book was made into the movie "The Lost Command."

My husband read both the Jean Larteguy books years ago and has been looking for copies for some time so he can reread them slowly and relish them. That's why I was prepared to pay such high prices for both. He is taking notes as he reads and enjoying 'The Centurions' to the full.
