From the Inside Flap

The roads were full of crashed automobiles and milling crowds of people, all of them wondering what had happened and asking themselves and each other if it could happen again. Consequently, it took Memphis almost twenty-five minutes to get to the CERN complex. By the time he reported in, the protestors in front of the main entrance had been cleared away. In their place were a mixture of Swiss, French, and U.S. troops and a clear series of checkpoints that made it quite clear to anyone looking on that it was strictly authorized personnel beyond this point.

Word of Memphis's arrival was swiftly relayed to the right individual after he produced his credentials. By the time Memphis managed to pass through the security at the gate and into the complex proper, he found a master sergeant named Mathers waiting for him on the other side.

"If you'll follow me, Captain Stone," Mathers said, and then he led him to where a HMMWV was parked a few yards away.

"What's happening, Gunny?" Memphis asked as he climbed inside and then waited for the other man to do the same.

Mathers shrugged. "Not sure, sir. Above my pay grade." He started the vehicle and quickly pulled out, heading down the main causeway, past the dome of the Center for Science and Innovation and toward the primary control facilities at the far side of the campus. The billowing cloud of smoke that Memphis had seen on the television was dissipating, but the thick scent of something burning still filled the air.

Mathers glanced over at Memphis as he drove, as if sizing him up. Memphis apparently met whatever criteria Mathers was looking for because after a moment the other man continued.

"The official line is that there's been a mechanical problem that forced an early shutdown of the Collider test. Unofficially, rumor has it that there's been a major screw-up somewhere inside the Collider complex and a team is being assembled to go down and take a look."

"And what does the rumor mill have to say about who the lucky s.o.b. is that gets to leads this team?"

Mathers laughed. "That s.o.b. would be you, sir," he said.

With Dr. Reese's words of warning echoing in the back of his mind, Memphis didn't find it half as amusing as Mathers.

I really enjoyed this introduction to the HELLstalkers universe. The action/horror/sci-fi all blended together very well. The characters we're likeable and the story moves along at a great pace.

A few typos were evident, the worst being in chapter 16. Where it should read 'than absolutely necessary' it reads 'thanely olut absnecessary'. It also had few misused words, 'grown' instead of 'groan' for example. The errors did not affect my enjoyment of the story.

I'm looking forward to future adventures of the HELLstalkers and I highly recommend it to action, sci-fi, and horror fans.

*Update*
I have been informed by the author that a revised version has been uploaded with the errors corrected.

Mediocre character development, which leads to cookie cutter single dimension characters. A demonstrated LACK of military knowledge, which in a military/horror thriller is inexcusable; please, use Wikipedia and do at least 5 minutes of research. Example: standard grenade launchers are single-shot, not 5-shot semi-autos. A "Gunnery Sergeant" is a USMC rank, not US Army, they are also not Master Sergeants, unless they are Master Gunnery Sgts...and if a lowly captain calls an E-9 "Gunny", there will be a conversation the captain will not enjoy.
Fast paced plotting doesn't distract from shallow writing and "unlimited funding=breaking the time lines of physics" plot crutches. Good for kids who want Call of Duty mixed with pseudo-Lovecraftian "horror" without the whole actual "tension" thing.

This book is too short and does not develope characters. It is designed just to give you a taste of what may follow. However, at this time there is nothing in the works to follow up. Disappointing.

This book reminds me of the Mack Bolen series. It is fast, fun and a great start to what I hope to be an ongoing series of incredible Sci-Fi books! The premise to the story is that there has always been small rifts between our dimensions and others and that the testing of the Large Hadron Collider has caused an instability between this world and something else. The HELLstalkers is a team of highly trained individuals that are sent in to deal with these rifts that are now opening around the world.

In this, the first of the series, the team is assembled and you get to know the team that is going to be the core of this Organization. A great read and more fun than I could have hoped for it to be!

Highly enjoyed this book. The story is fast paced, interesting, and action packed. The characters have well defined personalities though I wish the author had let me get to know them better, but this gives me more incentive to look forward to the comming novels. By far my favorite character is Ulf, a german spec ops that talks like a hippie just cracks me up. THe only downside I find is the lack of description to the actions and events the characters experience and encounter, then again I am one to very much enjoy a blow by blow account of almsot everything when it comes to a book.
I highly recommend this for anyone looking for something to go through in one sitting as I couldn't stop reading until I reached the end.

I've enjoyed reading stories from both authors previously, but I was only able to slog may way through the first four chapters of this one before I deleted it.
