Book Description

The Choice Is Yours book and video is a stark video containing stories from five of Tennessee’s death row inmates. It has been produced by Shirley Dicks who is author of nine books on crime and punishment. In the video, the five inmates attempt to educate teens about the dangers of crime, lack of education, drugs and imprisonment. It’s aimed at youths as young as the fourth grade and up.

To have no choices any longer, not of what they eat, or who they see will make them shudder. Their food is handed in through a pie hole in the door. They are in their 8x10 cells twenty-three hours a day.

They don't get to eat pizza, steak, hamburgers or ice cream any longer. Even to get enough toilet paper is hard, and they often have to beg for a roll.
They don't get to walk on grass any longer but cement dog pens when outside.
They can't call their friends when they want, only when a guard brings a phone. Some can't even hug their family members, if they even bother to visit which most don't.

All choices have been taken from them, and these men bring it all home.

The book is written in a manner so that everyone can understand. No matter your views or personal belif give the book a chance. You never know when you might get in a situation were you have to prove your innocence. Think if you get arrested you are looked at like you are guilty and have to go to court you have to prove your innocent. You need to pick and choose your friends carefully and the choices you make affect you everyday in everyway.

Very interesting stories compiled together. If you have a teenager in your life or a young adult that is having a difficult time and leaning towards a life of crime, have them read this book. I couldn't help looking up some of the inmates names on the Internet to see if they had been executed or what they were sitti on death row for. I learned that it doesn't take much from a child to go from petty theft to murder and sitting on death row.

Some of the stories were from bitter men who still didn't show remorse but all in all very good read and highly recommended.

More About the Author

I was born and raised in Concord, NH and moved south back in the 70s, ending up in TN. With four kids, I lived in NC for a few years until moving to middle Tn and began to write.

My first three books were bought by McFarland co, called, Death Row, Victims, and From Vietnam To Hell. Next, I sold Young Blood and Congregation of the Condemned by Prometheus Books and New Horizon Press took They're Going To Kill My Son which was my life story. However they changed things, names and all so eventually I rewrote it, brought it up to date and began to self publish my own books, called, A Mothers Torment,

I self published The Choice Is Yours, A Long Road Home, The Devil's Playground, and There IS Life After Fifty. McFarland is now republishing my first three books that had gone out of print and now I'm putting them up as ebooks.

Now that I'm in my seventies, I'm trying to learn photography now in order to do some travel articles with photos. Also working on two non fiction books plus a romance.

My oldest son Jeff Dicks was killed in 1999 due to medical neglect and I lost my youngest son Trevor Dicks who spoke out on the death penalty issue with me at schools and colleges, due to a car crash. I adopted Jeff's daughter when she was born and she's now in her thirties with three beautiful children of her own.

I try to keep busy with my writing, my photography, spending time with my three beautiful great grandchildren, crocheting and anything I can do.

Will be adding my books as ebooks in the near future
