The beautiful story of the birth of Jesus, our Savior, will never get old, but we don't often give much thought to the real people on that journey to Bethlehem.

Even in the midst of the busy holiday season, there is time to read this book and remember what Christmas is all about.

Format: Hardcover
A young couple experiences shame from their neighbor's disbelief of the origin of their pregnancy;
shame from a stable substitute for a birthing room;
sheep's bedding for blankets;
animal's rags for cleaning and swaddling. Then...
"The Savior is sleepy."
The parents' emotions, travel weariness, and fears are put to rest.
Thus goes the most miraculous of all birth miracles.

29 humble watercolors (Michael Storrings) help keep this variation of the birth story earthy and believable. Feel the dust, smell the hay mold, and partake in the flickering afterglow.

"The Christmas Journey" begins with the Luke's story from the Bible. Then Donna VanLiere retells the event in the assumed details experienced by the youthful parents, Mary and Joseph. A perfect way to begin the Christmas celebration. A quick read, likely one you'll you reread several times prior to Christmas Day.

Give it as a PRE-Christmas gift--like a card--as a reminder--as a witness. It belongs under every Christmas tree, unwrapped, available for reading.

Format: Hardcover
Every year the Christmas season seems to come earlier and earlier as the stores decorate even co-mingling with Thanksgiving as the Yuletide is a big sales time. Pageants are everywhere displaying the journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem and especially the nativity scene as Joseph and pregnant Mary found no room at the inn, but the owner allowed them to stay in a stable. This is the sentimental legend, but not the true story as another example of when "Professor" Wuhl's theory (extracted from Who Shot Liberty Valance?) that "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend" (see Assume the Position).

The couple travels seventy miles taking several days to complete the trek. As they depart from Nazareth, Joseph notices that people he knew all his life as friends treat Mary like a pariah because Mary became pregnant while living under her father's roof. They leave as outcasts in accordance to the then Laws of Moses. Their journey proves grueling with Mary feeling each step the donkey takes. She fears what is expected of her raising the Son; while he fears being the father to the Savior as he believes he cannot be worthy of having God bestow such an honor on him. When they reach their destination, the crowds are overwhelming and there is no place for them at the inn. Joseph feels overwhelmed because he has to help Mary deliver but though conditions are extremely poor, Mary gives birth to a healthy Savior.

Donna VanLiere `s version of one of the most legendary journeys provides a realistic look at the two travelers as a pregnant Mary rides a donkey for seventy miles (I rode a mule years ago down the Grand Canyon for a few hours and that was fun but a bit sore). The trek is dirty and dusty while people they know along their path ignore them The illustrations augment the story as Ms. VanLiere adds the human facts normally ignored by the miracle birth.

The Christmas Journey by Donna VanLiere is a thin book, perfect for getting you ready for the holidays. Accompanied by stunning watercolors by Michael Storrings, she retells the classic story of the journey to Bethlehem and nativity through the eyes of Mary and Joseph, making them real people with fears, hopes, and dreams. Reading the story of two young people put into an impossible situation and how they trusted God to carry them through it is inspiring. VanLiere, who is best known for her Christmas Hope series that began with The Christmas Shoes, keeps to the point, reminding readers that Jesus, who created the world, became a baby who hungered and cried and smiled. Even in the midst of the busy holiday season, there is time to read this book and remember what Christmas is all about.

Althought this book had beautiful photos and has an interesting spin on the Nativity Story- I thought this was going to be a novel just like the Christmas Hope series. Maybe I didn't do enough research myself, but when I saw another VanLiere Christmas book I automatically bought it. This is a short story- maybe even too short for a children's bedtime story- but again has a nice spin on the Nativity story. Just not as good as her other novels.

The Christmas Journey by Donna VanLiere is a narrative Donna wrote years back to read at a Christmas banquet. The book begins with the Christmas story as found in Luke 2. It then chronicles the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem and the birth of the Savior.

“Somewhere along the way the cave has been sanitized, the birth made painless and the people involved stripped of all fear or emotion.”

This short book describes a little of what it must have really been like for Mary and Joseph to travel to Bethlehem with Mary ready to give birth. Having had 5 children it made me appreciate the reality of what they must have gone through. Traveling eighty miles on the back of a donkey just days before having a baby, no thank you. What a miserable journey that must have been.

Reading this book made me appreciative for what Mary and Joseph went through and made me grateful for the conveniences of modern day life.

This is a really fast read, probably less than 30 minutes total to read. It’s filled with beautiful illustrations that accompany the story. A great reminder of the true meaning of Christmas.
