Editorial Reviews

Review

Debbie's book got me to stand up and take notice because it is unique, fun, and inspiring. How often are children's ideas discounted simply because they come from a young person? How often are children teased by their peers for suggesting something that isn't the status quo? The Christmas Pumpkin shares a valuable lesson with its readers- if you believe in something, you can make it happen. The best part about this message though, is that it is offered so gently readers don t feel like they're learning at all; to them, it's just a great story. This is destined to become one of my favorite Christmas stories because it goes right to the heart and inspires children to have faith in themselves and their ideas. The Christmas Pumpkin could become just as much of a holiday tradition in your house as the reading of Twas the Night Before Christmas. Buy The Christmas Pumpkin. You won't be disappointed! --The Children's and Teen's Book Connection

I bought this book at the Balitmore Book Festival, 2011. It was a wonderful story to share with my children. It also provided us the opportunity of a relaxing afternoon of creative coloring and designing our own Christmas pumpkins as a family. --Mother of 4 in Baltimore, MD

Her author visits are so entertaining and engaging. She is easy to talk to and interacts so well with children and adults of all ages. --Teacher - Sherman, Texas

The moment I heard about this book, I knew it would be one that I enjoyed. Even at 26 years old, I still love all the books I grew up with as a child, such as Goodnight Moon, The Runaway Bunny, I'll Love You Forever, etc. I have a feeling that had The Christmas Pumpkin by Debbie Reece been out when I was growing up, I would have been drawn to it like a moth to a flame.

Beautifully illustrated, The Christmas Pumpkin tells the story of a young boy name James (inspired by Reece's own son), who loves his green Christmas pumpkin and thinks that it will be just perfect for the holidays. Even though the people around him don't understand why James would want a green pumpkin for Christmas, with a little help from a magical friend, James learns to let his light shine, and soon, the Christmas Pumpkin becomes a citywide sensation.

This story, so heartwarming and genuine, brought tears to my eyes. It reminds me of all the childhood classics I grew up with, and I can't wait to share it with my little cousins, nieces and nephews, and children of friends. It was an instant hit with my family, whose favorite things include books, pumpkins, Halloween, and Christmas.

The Christmas Pumpkin is a story that parents and children alike can cherish over and over again, whether you read it together on Halloween, Christmas, or as a simple reminder to let your light shine, regardless of what others might think or say. Like the Christmas Pumpkin, this story is special, and one that simply must be shared.

A fun-filled, absolutely delightful story. An easy read that touches children of all ages (well maybe not the rebellious 17 year old, but that's another story!). Story flows easily and the pictures are perfect. This story just may change the way you look at the end of the year holidays (don't worry, it's in a GOOD WAY!).

As a mom of two grown children, I still purchased this book to share with them. It is a very sweet story that can be read at anytime of the year and not just Christmas. I enjoyed the book so much, that I purchased one for my little nephew and niece as well. A great addition to your kid's home library.

The Christmas Pumpkin is the story of James, who believed that there was a way to use the green pumpkin that came from his father's pumpkin patch. It never did turn to an orange color that could be decorated and used in the fall.
His mother tells him,
"Son, don't worry about what people say. I think it is a great idea. Tomorrow I will take you to the store and you can get some decorations for your Christmas Pumpkin."
James talks to several people about making his pumpkin a Christmas pumpkin because it is green. No one wanted to help him, except one little man with a white beard. He comes up with an idea and carries it out.
Read the book to find out what happens to James' pumpkin and the support he gets when he decorates it. This is a good book for children to learn to use their imagination and for parents to help their children nurture their creativity.
The Christmas Pumpkin is a 2011 NTBF Award finalist for children's books, presented at the North Texas Book Festival on April 16, 2011 at the Center for the Visual Arts in Denton, Texas.

Recipient of the Dove Family Seal of Approval

James's father owns a pumpkin patch that produced one green pumpkin that no one wanted. A green pumpkin? Eww! James decided that the pumpkin was perfect and he wanted to decorate it for Christmas with a nice red candle for the season's colors. No one thought it is a good idea except James's family who tell him to not give up and it doesn't matter what anyone says. Soon, James's decorated pumpkin becomes a curious figure on his doorstep as well as an inspiration to his neighbors. Who ever heard of a green pumpkin? But, you know what? People did fall in love with the green pumpkin and the cut out star James did was his reminder of the star that the Three Wise Men followed. It taught the neighbors and James that it is good to be different and you should always follow your dreams. This is an easy reader perfect for the entire family and includes full color illustrations and a pull out coloring page to design your own Christmas Pumpkin.

There is something wonderful about seeing beauty and utility where everyone else sees nothing. There is something wonderful about doing something completely different and unexpected, and having the action become well-received and supported.

Most people wouldn't have any use for a green pumpkin at any time of the year, but especially not in December when all the decorative orange pumpkins have begun to rot. A little boy, however, thought that a green pumpkin would make the perfect Christmas pumpkin, and, because of his belief and his work, he was right.

The illustrations are unstated in a way that allows the text to shine without being overshadowed. They are sweet and very well-done.
