"…rosy-cheeked Anja looks like she’s stepped out of a fairy tale, and Breiehagen’s delicious (and, necessarily, digitally altered) photographs of her riding on the back of a polar bear and meeting Santa amid the snowy pines of the North Pole create the sense that magic is very real." -- Starred, Publishers Weekly
"[The Christmas Wish] points to both the timelessness and the otherworldliness of a child's Christmastime wonder." --The Horn Book
"…this cozy Nordic tale filled with extraordinary photographs will have readers of all ages believing in the magic of Christmas. This is one to pull out every year and savor." --The Children's Book Review
"Dreams have never been so photogenic." --USA Today

Besides the beautiful photography what I liked about the book was the kindness exhibited by Anja and the animals. Anja, for example, before she heads out to find Santa so she can become one of his helpers, visits a elderly neighbor. Anja catches the widow's cat, so that the old woman won't have to go out into the deep snow to do this, and then Anja sweeps out the woman's sauna and does some other chores. I found this very appealing and suitable to the season and what I want my children to learn.
THE CHRISTMAS WISH is not a book with an emphasis on the religious reason for Christmas. But It still fits the season because of it's emphasis on kindness.
I've reviewed this for my website. There are sample pages there.
Norway has rich traditions in handcrafts, architecture, and particularly in fairy tales. If you have even a passing familiarity with Scandinavia, you'll appreciate rich but subtle references in Anja's finely handcrafted Norwegian clothing and accessories, the iconicałly Norwegian farm buildings, and various cultural and literary references in the story itself. If such wonders are unfamiliar to you, you've been missing out and this book will be the perfect introduction.
This is a simple but magical book and an instant classic.
Story starts when main character, young girl Anja with big blue eyes, wants to become one of the Santa’s elves. Anja doesn’t want her family to worry so she’ll leave them a message that she’s good and where she went.
And after she helped her old neighbor, on her skis she went to find Santa. On her way she’ll experience a lot of adventures, and a lot of polar animals will help her until she finally reach her goal…
Lori Evert and her husband Per Breiehagen together with their daughter Anja made this beautiful book in which the children will enjoy, because every child is certainly at least once wanted to do the best job in the world, helping Santa to distributing gifts to good children.
Interesting story and nice illustrations full of vivid colors make this book highly recommended for reading with children in a warm room on Christmas, and it can certainly be taken into consideration if you are looking for a beautiful Christmas gift for some other children.
book stores and was a real treasure when I was able to order it on Amazon....I bought several copies to give as special gifts. A
darling story but it's the photographs that grab your heart. The little girl's father took the photos of his daughter and the mother made
the Christmas Story to go with....don't miss this one.
