Book Description

Deadly Beasts. Brutal combat. Welcome to Avantia.

At the age of seven, Tanner's father was killed in front of him by the evil warlord Derthsin. But his father's death was not in vain and Derthsin was carried away to his doom by a good Beast, Firepos the Flame Bird. Now, eight years later, another evil army is wreaking havoc across Avantia. But Tanner has been training with Firepos, waiting to avenge his father's death. There is something familiar about this new menace, who rides with a Beast of his own. The evil army is after the pieces of the Mask of Death--which allows whoever wears it to control all Beasts. Tanner sets off on a journey to stop them. Along the way, he encouters twins Gwen and Geffen, who hold the map to finding the remaining pieces.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“This first volume in a promising new series is fizzy, fast-paced adventure all the way….A slim, easy-to-read, high-interest offering that will be an easy sell to readers just venturing into chapter books.” -Kirkus

About the Author

Adam Blade is in his late twenties, and was born in Kent, England. His parents were both history teachers and amateur artists, and Adam grew up surrounded by his father's paintings of historic English battles which left a lifelong mark on his imagination. He was also fascinated by the ancient sword and shield that hung in his father's office. Adam’s father said they were a Blade family heirloom.

Sadly, Adam does not have his own Ice Dragon or Ghost Panther. But he really wishes he did!

1.0 out of 5 stars Graphic violence for 8yos?!? September 12, 2013
Format:Paperback
I was really disappointed and alarmed at this story. What promised to be a quest-adventure story quickly turned dark with constant, graphically bloody scenes of violence and murder. Early in the book the young hero watches his father get hacked down by the primary villain, and later the author has the young hero watch the primary henchman murder his grandmother, describing how the sword thrust pins her to the floor while blood spatters out. WHAT!?!? This level of graphic, bloody violence runs throughout the book - arrows piercing eyes, people rolling around being burned by flames, throats being slit. TOO MUCH!

And even my little one was struck by how inconsistent the primary heroes are, how many dumb mistakes they make, how in one scene something is described and a page later seems to have vanished, etc. It feels to me like this author was rushing to meet deadlines. Even an 8yo deserves a well crafted story without being spattered by gore every other page!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I‘ve Ever Read October 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I chose a five star rating because it got me wondering how far Derthsin had actually gotten to destroying or ruling the kingdom. There is definitely something fishy going on between Geffen and Derthsin. I wonder if they're related in some way. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who favors the Beast Quest series. You will NEVER EVER read another book like this one. The only books that are like this one are the rest of the books in this series. Go read another Chronicles of Avantia book and may the beasts be with you!

More About the Author

Adam Blade is in his late twenties, and was born in Kent, England. His parents were both history teachers and amateur artists, and Adam grew up surrounded by his father's paintings of historic English battles - which left a lifelong mark on his imagination. He was also fascinated by the ancient sword and shield that hung in his father's office. Adam's father said they were a Blade family heirloom. As a boy, Adam would spend days imagining who could have first owned the sword and shield. Eventually, he created a character - Tom, the bravest boy warrior of them all. The idea for Beast Quest was born. hen Adam grew up and decided that he wanted to be a writer, he was stuck for ideas - until he remembered the old sword and shield, and the imaginary boy he had created when he was young. Adam decided to bring Tom fully to life so that readers could go on the kind of adventures that he always wanted to when he was that age... And still does, even though he's grown up! When he's not writing Beast Quest books, Adam enjoys visiting museums and ancient battle sites. His main hobbies are fencing and football. He also spends a lot of time at home running around after his two exotic pets - a tarantula named Ziggy, and a capuchin monkey named Omar. These little rascals were the inspiration for two of the Beasts that Tom faces on his Quest - Arachnid and Claw. adly, Adam does not have his own Fire-Dragon or Horse-Man. But he really wishes he did!
