ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK
THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER

Return to the magic and wonder of C.S. Lewis' beloved world via the fantastic Narnian ship, the Dawn Treader. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is composed by Grammy® Award-winner David Arnold (Independence Day, Casino Royale) and follows the hugely successful first two soundtracks in The Chronicles of Narnia series. Arnold has delivered a stirring new score while incorporating the beloved themes from the prior Narnia films composed by Harry Gregson-Williams.

In short, I would argue this to be David Arnold's best achievement thus far in film score.
David Phipps
There are hints of the Narnia music we have come to know and love with a new spin on it that I think makes it richer, deeper, and just plain better.
Sarah
It worked very well in the film and now that I have images to go with the score, I find it even more moving.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the third contemporary film based on the Chronicles of Narnia saga by C. S. Lewis. Directed by Michael Apted, it tells the story of the two youngest Pevensie children, Lucy and Edmund, who return to the fantastical land of Narnia with their insufferable cousin Eustace to assist the noble Prince Caspian and the heroic mouse warrior Reepicheep aboard the royal ship, the Dawn Treader. Caspian is attempting to solve the mysterious disappearance of eight Narnian lords in the remote islands of the Western seas, and must do battle with slave traders, sea serpents, dragons, and the spectral legacy of the Snow Queen along the way. The film stars Georgie Henley, Skandar Keynes, Ben Barnes and Will Poulter, the voice work of Liam Neeson and Simon Pegg, features cameos from Tilda Swinton, Anna Popplewell and William Moseley, and has an original score by David Arnold.

David Arnold is an interesting choice to provide the film's music. He has worked with director Michael Apted before, on films such as Amazing Grace, Enough and the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough, but it's been over a decade since Arnold scored a film with fantasy elements (the last being Godzilla), having spent the majority of his time since then scoring small-scale dramas and comedies alongside his Bond franchise. Furthermore, Harry Gregson-Williams created a fairly solid and popular musical identity for the Narnia series with his scores for The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe in 2005 and Prince Caspian in 2008, so replacing him mid-franchise would seem to be an odd decision. But, with a new director at the helm and a new studio holding the purse strings, musical changes often result; besides, changes of this kind didn't hold back the Harry Potter franchise any.

Like another reviewer has already expressed here, I was somewhat skeptical about David Arnold's ability to follow Harry Gregson-Williams. His scores for Independence Day, Godzilla, and James Bond, while excellent for the most part, show a very distinctive sound that is David Arnold's signature. Now, I should stop and mention as a professional musician, that for a composer to have a recognizable signature sound is a very high complement indeed. One of the great tragedies of recent film music is a homogenized sameness among numerous music soundtracks. So for a soundtrack to be recognizably David Arnold's is one of the highest praises a composer could receive.

That being the case, the Narnia Chronicles were obviously given their sound by Gregson-Williams, so a certain consistency is certainly desirable. Whether or not Arnold has achieved this in adequate measure would seem to be the pertinent question here. Another review here has suggested that, because this music is recognizably by David Arnold, adequate consistency has not been achieved. Certainly that reviewer is entitled to their opinion, and I don't want to take anything away from an otherwise thoughtfully written review, but I would suggest that another point of view is in order besides simply continuing the same thing that has gone before.

Voyage of the Dawn Treader is the darkest of the three movies thus far, therefore needing a darker, more mature sounding score to go with it. In addition, the occasional pop-style drum beats in Gregson-Williams scores detracted, I felt, from an otherwise very artistic statement in each movie and denigrated the accompanying scene to a less mature level.

While not as great as the Lion, Witch and Wardrobe soundtrack, this is still worth a listen. Still, I am puzzled. Wasn't Carrie Underwood's single, "There's a Place For Us" supposed to be on this CD?

...Just saw the movie and can now put the soundtrack in context. It worked very well in the film and now that I have images to go with the score, I find it even more moving. The movie did have Carrie Underwood's single during the credits. Should have included it in this soundtrack.

The music from this soundtrack, is fantastic. It was nice to hear that Arnold chose to keep a sampling of Gregson-Williams' work for two short tracks.

The only thing that prevents this from getting a full five stars is the choice to make the Carrie Underwood song iTunes only. Glad I was able to download the song, but I wish it was on my hard copy of the CD.

Great music, though. A definite buy.

I've not seen "The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader," but the soundtrack is amazing. From "Opening Titles" to "Time To Go Home," David Arnold does a magnificent job in Harry Gregson-Williams' stead. I like the quiet themes, and the action cues. A worthy musical successor to "The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian." Highly recommended.

This OST is very well written and extremely well executed and recorded. I often walk around my college campus at night listening to this, imagining I'm in someplace wonderful and magical. I just can't get over how good this is. The central theme of the movie is very recognizable and easy to pick out. When a song from this soundtrack pops up on shuffle, I know that it is from Voyage of the Dawn Treader. I love the movies and love the soundtracks even more. This was a great addition to my music library.
