Review

With all the church planting we see today, we often overlook the calling and the burden that is placed on the woman behind the man. Christine Hoover's vivid story-telling of the struggles and joys of being a church planter's wife is beautifully weaved into God's truth for women who find themselves under the difficult task of ministering to the man who ministers to everyone else.

-Matt Carter, church planter and Pastor of Preaching and Vision at The Austin Stone Community Church, co-author with Darrin Patrick of For the City: Proclaiming and Living Out the Gospel

Few things are as challenging and exciting as planting a church.  This book will help you get through the tough times and help you appreciate the blessings in church planting.

-Lora Batterson, wife of Mark Batterson, who planted and pastors National Community Church in Washington D.C.

Church planting wives, you will feel that Christine Hoover has read your journals.  She is on your journey and is able to verbalize church planting skillfully and with penetrating honesty.  This is a must read book. You have found the mentor you have longed for.

-Kathy Ferguson Litton, National Consultant for Ministry Wives, North American Mission Board

Across the globe the priorities of a church planting wife are the same: love the Lord, love your husband and family, love the church. Christine invites you into her life and the lives of other women as they have Christ-centered conversations about seeking to live out their privileged calling wherever God has planted them.

-Gloria Furman, church planting wife in the Middle East, author of Glimpses of Grace: Treasuring the Gospel in Your Home.

Too often we, as church planters' wives, have suffered in silence as we've battled criticism, isolation, or discouragement in ministry. Christine not only shares the raw emotions thatcome with the difficulties of church planting, she gives much needed insight for flourishing in ministry for a lifetime. The Church Planting Wife will not disappoint!

-Tricia Lovejoy, wife of Shawn Lovejoy, who is the founder and pastor of Mountain Lake Church in Atlanta, GA and the founder of Churchplanters.com

Ministry is both a challenge and a blessing.  The demands of responsibility can eat away the joy of changed lives.  This is especially true in the heart of a church planting wife, but it doesn't have to be.  We have known Christine long before she had the job description of Church Planting Wife. In the past and present, we have seen her faith shine!  In these pages she will help your faith shine as well.  You are on an exciting journey; let Christine walk with you as you embrace your role as a church planting wife.

-Gregg and Kelly Matte, Pastor and wife of Houston's First Baptist Church, Founder of Breakaway Ministries at Texas A&M, Author of I AM changes who I am.

Church planting is not an endeavor pursued in isolation. Husbands cannot succeed in ministry without their wives and vice versa. I am delighted Christine has put together this helpful resource to encourage church planting wives.

-Ed Stetzer, president of LifeWay Research and author of Planting Missional Churches

The church planting wife--what goes on in her heart? It's an all-encompassing spiritual and emotional pendulum swinging from fear to trust and every emotion in between. Christine's vulnerable insights will encourage you amidst the heart-swings, offering a steady hold on peace in the God who called you. I've been deeply blessed by these truth-filled words after my 8 years on the planting journey.

-Ginger Vassar, wife of JR Vassar, who is founder and pastor of Apostles Church in New York City

This honest, powerful, wonderfully written book is a must read for every church planting wife. Christine gives all planting wives the gift of knowing they are not alone in the struggles and challenges they face. She also offers them the hope they need to continue on in serving God in their churches.

-Lori Wilhite, founder of Leading and Loving It and wife of Jud Wilhite, who is Senior Pastor at Central Christian Church in Las Vegas

Christine's real life approach to ministry makes her contagious. She honestly shares the ups and downs of church planting while offering encouragement that provides hope. The Church Planting Wife is a handbook for ladies who are beginning this journey as well as seasoned church planting wives.

-Brandi Wilson, wife of Pete, who is pastor of Cross Point Church in Nashville, TN. Brandi is the co-author of Leading and Loving It.

From the Back Cover

"Now we faced the difficult work of church planting. Was I willing?"

A church planting wife must develop a job description, be a wise helper to her husband, develop friendships within the church and within the community, deal with stress and discouragement, handle wounds, and more. Christine Hoover knows the joys and challenges. She says, "Church planting is hard work . . . but it's so worth it!"

She will offer practical encouragement for church planting wives. In addition, you'll enjoy reading interviews with other women who have tended the new ground of a church plant. First of all, let me say that I am NOT a church planter's wife.

I've read a lot of books about ministry (my husband is in his second year of vocational ministry, but we have served as active leaders and members in churches for years). I have never read a book that so perfectly pinpoints the struggles women tend to face in ministry, and then offers hope and biblical answers that aren't just band aids, but REAL heart solutions.

Some topics addressed in this book are: friendships, loneliness, prayer, dependence, humility and pride, priorities, selfishness, hospitality (Her perspective is SO freeing, I love it!) and the list goes on.

So buy this book if you are ANY of the following:

1. A christian woman
2. Active in a church
3. In ministry vocationally
4. Looking forward to serving vocationally
5. Struggling to find your place of service in the church
6. Wanting a closer walk with the Lord
7. A missionary
8. A friend of someone who is in vocational ministry
9. A husband in ministry
10. Wanting to understand and encourage your pastor's wife

You will find this book encouraging in your walk with Christ, in your relationships with others in the church, and challenging as you serve either vocationally or just as a regular attender or member of a church.

Though the author is a church planter's wife, the issues she addresses, the instruction and encouragement she offers can benefit any woman in the body of Christ.

Christine Hoover hit the nail on the head with this fantastic book. My husband and I planted a church in September of 2012, and it has not been an easy road to walk. Reading this book was like sitting down and talking with a new best friend who's been where I am now. Christine doesn't sugar-coat how hard the church-planting life is, but with gentle encouragement, she challenged me to embrace God's calling on my life, and reminded me that the Christian life is one of sacrifice and taking up your cross to follow Jesus. The book is chock-full of great advice on every subject from marriage to friendships to fear and stress, and from a solidly biblical perspective. I wish this book had come out before my husband and I started our church-planting journey. If you are a church-planter, are considering church-planting, or even if you're simply a woman who longs to be recklessly abandoned to God's calling on your life, you should this book!

A confession before I begin my review: I'm not technically a church-planting wife. When my husband accepted a call in 2009 to serve as Flint River Bible Fellowship's first preaching pastor, the church was already established. Two years before we came, our church was founded by three families who felt a desperate need in Southwest Georgia for a Christ-centered church committed to biblically robust, expositional preaching, and they labored tirelessly to make their vision a reality. Because of their faithfulness, by the time we responded to the call, the church already had a regular meeting place, church by-laws, volunteers leading worship and teaching children, and a tiny, but enthusiastic, congregation. Thus, our family was spared the often grueling rite of passage that many pastors and their families must endure in order to start a new church.

That being said, we have often felt like a church-planting family. Like Christine Hoover, the author of The Church Planting Wife, I know what it's like to watch your husband slave over a sermon all week, only to find him preaching on Sunday morning to a congregation of three. I know what it's like to buy a house, praying that we'll have a salary to lean on in the years to come. I can relate to the fear that if just two families were to move away suddenly, the church might have to close its doors, and I also know what it's like to have to meet in the creepy "Knights of Columbus" building for several months because we lack a building of our own. And, by God's grace, I also know what it's like to feel overrun with goose bumps on a Sunday morning when our congregation sings a hymn a cappella, and the sound is so rich and diverse that I can barely hear my own voice.

Christine Hoover has put together an amazing resource for the women who stand beside their husbands as they go out and bravely plant churches. I think I read this book in one night.... it's that good. She's honest about her journey and gives great hope to any who have been in her shoes or will be one day. She interviews some great women who have walked down this road and shares their insight. As a pastor's wife, mom and just woman who loves Jesus, I loved this book and look forward to sharing it!

This book is a must read for every Pastor's wife. It puts words to the pressures and struggles that sometimes we feel and just can't describe. Christine offers encouragement in the fact that you are not alone while giving you Biblical advise that helped see her through. I loved the interviews at the beginning of each chapter where Christine spoke with other Pastor's wives who offered insight to the way they deal with certain issues.

Christine offers the reader a transparent look into the struggles she faced as a church planting wife while offering practical and Biblical advice in seeking God for your Hope and Approval. She can speak (write) with integrity because she has been there. She is honest and down to earth making the reader feel like she's one of your best friends.

I highly recommend this book whether you are planting a church, thinking about planting a church, or several years in!
