I was very cautious about formulating my final opinion about The Circle In The Square. The Flobots have always been one of my favorite bands and I didn't want the respect that I have for them after Fight With Tools and Survival Stories to play a role in rating their newest CD. After a couple listens through I thought this album was unbelievably mediocre. Most of the songs simply didn't make sense to me, but then I watched a youtube video with one of Flobots' lead rappers, Johnny 5 talking about their upcoming release. It was a forty-minute long interview on the band's past, principles, and most of all The Circle In The Square. Johnny 5 explains most of the songs on the cd in depth and completely eliminated my dissappointment in their new album. "On Loss and Having" was a song that I was completely surprised by when he said that it was about Jesus and the last supper. He also explained "Wrestling Israel" and all of a sudden, it made sense. The Flobots have also released an even more elaborate background description of the tracks off their new cd on Facebook.

In my eyes The Circle In The Square is their most diverse sounding and well-rounded album to date. I was concerned going into it that not having a guitarist for this album would somehow take away from the experience of listening to the Flobots, but I was wrong. Not having a studio guitarist just forced the most original bands in music to become even more creative. Johnny 5's New Year Resolution was to write a rap every day called, "The Rhyme of the Day," and post it on youtube, in hopes of honing his craft even further and man can you tell. Johnny 5's flow is as smooth as it has ever been and his lyrics are still strong and inspiring. "Peace in the Middle East! Peace in the Middle East! Just an expression, but we mean it literally.

The Flobots cover some interesting issues, not all of which I entirely agree with, but; for the most part they provide some insight into some social faux pas in a thought provoking lyrical style absent from music (especially rap music) today. If nothing else they are original, creative, and cunning artists who I wished more people paid attention to.

I've enjoyed listening to Flobots for some time now, and have really like the message presented in their lyrics as well as the great melodies. However, this album didn't really do anything for me, while I agreed and like some of the messages they sent, I found that there was perhaps too much of a focus on the political message and not enough on the music. Other than that, it's a good album, but not their best.

Speak the truth friends! Instead of playing music as the Titanic sinks, they sing about how to get on the emergency boats and to try to save each other. Thanks for telling it how it is!

I have listened to all of the Flobots Cd. I will start by essentially rating them in order of how I rate them. Number 1 is Fight with Tools and is one my favorite cds ever produced. While the Cd did have songs that did feel a little unessential. Many songs had a very important and serious message and when they peaked they were absolutely amazing. Track 2 Mayday starts the cd and really sets it off and is very powerful in terms of its discussion of show American foreign affairs really occur behind the scenes of media and how our country truly operates. Obviously ending with Rise is brilliant. Well you see now in 2nd is Circle in the Square. I felt somewhat letdown by Survival Sotry. It is still a very good Cd but often just lacked what I will say as the passion and fire in Fight with Tools. I feel Circle has recaptured that. Not having a studio guitarist would ruin most bands but you can see the effort put in by all members to essentially nullify that and produce great music. I honestly very rarely noticed. I cant think of 1 instance where I said, wow where's the guitar. The drums to me are.actually the best to me but that is really my bias:) I felt the trumpet lacked a little but the cd is still great and is one of may favorites (in general, not.in flobots history) very proud to say this band has continued there brilliance because they are amazingly unique and offer something so much outside of what the musical Hits parameters offer. The title obviously points to this. I'm a big fan but regardless I think people should give this cd and all flobots a chance as they offer amazing lyrics and great instrumentals by all member. As a man born in.england, they are not marmite! You shouldn't just love them or hate the . All.ages could love this cd and at the same time.Read more ›

I've given this a few chances. It just doesn't seem to have the spirit of the other albums. It is a little more political and a little less musical.
