Editorial Reviews

Review

'Cities have begun to feel the sting of a changing climate already. This powerful volume reminds us what we can still do - globally and locally - by adapting to that which we can't prevent, and even more crucially, preventing that to which we can't adapt.' - Bill McKibben, Schumann Distinguished Scholar at Middlebury College and author of 'The End of Nature

'In this groundbreaking study Stone provides the first systematic analysis of what a changing climate will mean for cities. Stone argues convincingly that we must be as concerned about urban warming as global warming. ... a clarion call for cities to begin to shape their climate destinies. - Timothy Beatley, Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable Communities, University of Virginia

' ... highly significant and unique because it fully bridges the study of cities, climate, and urban heat.' - William D. Solecki, Professor, Department of Geography, City University of New York (CUNY)

'A great introduction to how climate change will hit cities and what can be done about it . . . essential reading for urban planners, city officials, and the general public.' - David W. Orr, Oberlin College, author of Down to the Wire: Confronting Climate Collapse

"highly readable, informative book..excellent volume does not simply reiterate what has been said many times before. Stone's clear writing enables anyone to understand and appreciate the importance of these local regional climate factors. Highly Recommended." - B Ransom, CHOICE, November 2012

"...begins with one of the most persuasive and surprising chapters that I have read...Overall, Stone's excellent book provides an important service in bringing urban heat island forward as a core and resolvable urban challenge...this is not just a book for climate enthusiasts. Rather, it will be a helpful book for anyone interested in improving human health and safety through better urban form" - Elisabeth Harmin, Journal of the American Planning Association, January 2013

A professor recommended that I look into Dr. Stone's work as part of writing my dissertation on climate change education in Georgia. It helped me focus my attention on urban heat islands, and climate change where people live. Most people think of climate change as a current problem in the arctic, and a future problem where they live.

By helping me understand climate change as a local phenomenon, it transformed my thinking about climate change.

I work at a college where a professor told me they would like to order this book. I did. They have not complained! The outside looks nice, I am sure the content is educational and informative as well.

Dr Stone provides enlightened insight into the unintentional consequences of urban growth. This is a great book to become more familiar with the concept of urban heat islands and solutions to the problem. These solutions impact not only air temperature, but also improve our systems' economic efficiencies and social well being.
