Review

There is seldom a book which is so encompassing or interesting that you cannot put it down. This is what "Cleansing of America" does to you. This book is replete with doctrinal references, not just for Latter-day Saints, but for all Christians.
--Michael J. Thompson, Association for Mormon Letters

About the Author

W. Cleon Skousen is best remembered as a popular author, speaker and teacher who lectured in every state and province in North America, and in more than 60 countries world-wide. He was a student of history and a scholar of law, specializing in the principles of Freedom, the U.S. Constitution, economics, and ancient history and scriptures.

He was invited to write a new constitution for Canada and the proposed United States of Latin America, and he published a model constitution that could be adopted by nations everywhere. He served in the FBI for 16 years, four years as Chief of Police in Salt Lake City, and ten years as a university professor. He was a prolific writer and produced three national best sellers, The Naked Communist, The Naked Capitalist, and The Five Thousand Year Leap. Eight of his books were used as college texts, and several were translated and published in other countries.

Dr. Skousen was born in Canada, and returned to the U.S. with his family at age ten. He spent two years in Mexico, two years in England, graduated from San Bernardino College in California, and received his juris doctor degree from George Washington University Law School. He was admitted to practice law in the District of Columbia and before the District Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court.

His seminars on the Constitution have been taught to several million across the U.S., and among his students were dozens of U.S. Senators and Representatives, two Supreme Court justices, and several candidates for President. He believed knowledge and understanding were key to maintaining a free country, and spent his entire adult life opening up complex issues for deeper understanding by students and audiences all around the world.

Mr. Skousen and his wife, Jewel Pitcher of San Bernardino, California, are the parents of eight children, 50 grandchildren, and more than 120 great-grandchildren.

This was unexpectedly not what I expected. From the author's history, I expected something similar to The 5,000 Year Leap: something political, Constitutional, historical, and patriotic. From the cover, I definitely expected such.

Inside, I found what I call a "signs of the times" book. "The Cleansing of America" takes a look at both Biblical prophecies, as well as prophecies of modern-day prophets. This is clearly a book intended for an LDS audience, although a non-LDS reader would equally enjoy it, so long as they understood the beliefs of Latter-day Saints. It is dictated by the belief that modern-day prophets help us understand the older prophecies, and Skousen thereby interprets both prophecies and draws conclusions. This makes it truly unique, as I have never found a book like this before. I don't know that every conclusion he makes is entirely 100% foolproof or accurate - such a conclusion would need to be made by each reader - but I love the fact that each point he makes is backed up by citations. This is a mark of a true scholar.

This book provides a primarily "LDS" perspective of the winding-up scenes surrounding the United States of America's destiny among the World Nations and the Coming of Jesus Christ. Many of the quotes and scriptures are often cited by other scholars from LDS sources when discussing this item. Skousen's style and format make an easy read for the reader to grasp what is being presented. If you have a desire to learn about the "Last Days" conclusion from a Latter-day Saint perspective, then this is the book for you.

Included in this book are the events and stages the Lord has predicted, through his servants, and the winding-up scenes of this world. It helps the reader understand: the nature of prophecy, the known chronology of prophetic events, and the importance of staying close to the Lord and his prophets during the difficult and challenging years prior to the Second Coming. We are fast approaching those prophetic events. Some are upon us even now. Skousen points out that if we are prepared and obedient, we need not fear these events, but should embrace them for the blessings they will bring.

We all hope that we might someday qualify as a steward in a Zion society, but the probability is that not more than one out of ten of us will make it unless we undertake additional preparations. This is a powerful book, and one that I want to encourage all my family and friends to read. It has certainly changed my life and the way I think, and act.

This book has made me stop and think about the way I'm conducting my life. I know that I'm not good enough to live the law of consecration, but if I work hard, I think I can be ready. Included in the book is a long list of commandments that we all need to follow. If we follow the counsel given to us by our prophet, and other general authorities, as well as our local priesthood leaders, we will be guided in knowing how best to prepare for the days ahead.

When I find an author I trust who has written about the things I hold dear, such as the LDS gospel, the founding of America and the U.S. Constitution, I can hardly wait to read what they have to say. I loved this book from the first page until the very end. I wanted more and I'm glad that Valor Publishing has agreed to publish more of his books.

I homeschool two teenagers and am currently using Mr. Skousen's book, "The First 2,000 Years", as a supplement to our World History course. I prayerfully choose all teaching material, from the big stuff like textbooks to the minutia, like short video clips and one-sentence quotes from the web.

While reading "The Cleansing of America", I had the same impression of its content as I did with that of "The First Two Thousand Years": some info is in line with scripture and official Church teachings and some is the author's interpretation of scripture and Church teachings. Ultimately, each of us must decide what is true and what is not, but we don't have to figure it out on our own. We have a loving Heavenly Father who invites us to prayerfully seek His counsel in determining what is true and correct. My comments above reflect my answer from Him regarding Mr. Skousen's writings.

Finally, this quote from former LDS Church president, Joseph Fielding Smith, given in the October 1918 General Conference re: false prophecy (in this case, the White Horse prophecy) adds to my philosophy in determining truth from fiction:

"I have discovered that people have copies of a purported vision by the Prophet Joseph Smith given in Nauvoo, and some people are circulating this supposed vision, or revelation, or conversation which the prophet is reported to have held with a number of individuals in the city of Nauvoo.
