Editorial Reviews

Review

I thought this was a great story - hot, sweet, romantic, sexy.  Loved the combination of the shy virgin with the good-hearted manwhore.  Definitely a recommended read. -- Joyfully Jay Reviews, 4.75 stars

This is the first book by L.A. Witt that I have had the privilege of reading but it certainly will not be the last. Ms. Witt is a masterful storyteller and her characters are well developed.-- Cameron, Guilty Pleasures Reviews, 4.5 tars

A captivating read from beginning to end. I would completely recommend The Closer You Get to any readers who like their stories filled with doubt, hard-headed men, and the hope that love conquers all in the end. -- Whipped Cream Reviews, 5 Cherries

More About the Author

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn't lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies. She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don't tell Lauren. And definitely don't tell Lori A. Witt or Ann Gallagher. Neither of those twits can keep their mouths shut...

Kieran Frost is a slut, and he knows it. He loves the single life and relishes both his hot one night stands and playing the third with his friends Rhett and Ethan. When Rhett's daughter asks him to meet her newly out of the closet friend, Alex, Kieran figures he'll do the guy a favor and show him around Seattle's gay nightlife. Kieran doesn't mind the attraction that sparks the instant he meets Alex. Why not be the one to introduce Alex to the pleasures of sex? It's not like Kieran doesn't have the experience and - when it comes to Alex - Kieran doesn't mind going slow. But tangling with this virgin doesn't just mess with Kieran's sheets. Suddenly, the self-described manwhore finds that his perfect plan to help Alex explore his sexuality before they each go their separate ways has a problem. The more time Kieran spends with Alex, the less he can imagine ever letting the other man go.

I LOVE this book! With THE CLOSER YOU GET, author L.A. Witt has delivered an incredibly engaging romance with two heroes that captured my heart and supporting characters that charmed the hell out of me.

Both Alex and Kieran are on a journey of self-discovery, though only one of them knows it. Alex grew up having to hide the fact that he is gay and now, at twenty-one, living in a place where he can be out, he feels lost at sea, unsure of where to start when it comes to claiming his sexuality. It was a joy to watch Alex go from shy virgin to confident lover. Ms. Witt makes this transition believable, which is part of the reason THE CLOSER YOU GET shines. Kieran is the perfect person to help Alex come out of his shell. He's knowledgeable, comfortable and straightforward when it comes to sex and men, but those aren't the only reasons why he's a great guide for Alex.

The only reason why I didnt give this book a five star rating is because I thought there were some slow parts in the book. The character were awesome and I love them both and what they go through. They learn new things from one another and start to look at things differently. You care for them both and wish things would hurry up in the right direction. Like I said though is was slow in some parts were I kinda lost interest but kept on reading the ending was sweet.

I enjoyed this book much more than its predecessor, The Distance Between Us. This story picks up two years later with Kieran still bartending at a club and enjoying a sexual relationship with reunited couple, Rhett and Ethan. Rhett's daughter asks Kieran if he can help out her new friend, Alex, since he's recently come out and isn't completely comfortable in his skin. Reluctantly, Kieran agrees.

Even though it is a little uncomfortable and awkward at first, Kieran and Alex actually hit it off. Kieran is more than willing to show Alex everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING) from cool sights throughout the city to the more carnal pleasures of man. Needless to say, Alex is a very eager student.

Originally, the plan was for their relationship to be strictly casual, but soon feelings get involved and Kieran has to grapple with feelings he hasn't experienced (or allowed himself to experience) in a long time and his inadequacies compared to the sweet, kind-hearted and all around good Alex.

This book was sweet and somewhat of a departure from the last book. I felt like there was more romance and found myself actually caring about Kieran and what he was going through (something that was very difficult when he was introduced in The Distance Between Us). There really isn't anything bad I can say about Alex. He was the perfect virginal nerd who could easily melt your heart.

I just wish that the epilogue could have been a little longer. Those who have read the book will understand. Even though it ended with us filled with hope and excitement, it would have been nice to see how it all panned out in the end.

L.A. Witt's sequel is a series of sex scenes. I mean really, I love hot sex scenes as much as the next person, but I would like a little story line as well. The idea of the story GREAT. The delivery bad. It would have been interesting to know what Alex was thinking. Switching view points maybe - or third person instead of 1st. A constant diatribe of Keiran, as cute and as interesting as he thinks he is, just did not pull this book. It was almost as bad as reading someone very plain journal.

I had to push myself to finish this book, which is very unlike me.

The basis of this story is a common theme; boy meets boy, boy falls in love unexpectedly, and boy deals with his fear of commitment. Kieran Frost is a self-proclaimed bachelor who is convinced relationships and love don't last forever. Kieran is a very likeable guy, he knows what he wants and doesn't want out of life, and doesn't hurt others in the process of living his free loving life style. But when face to face with a virgin seeking guidance into the gay life style, all he ever thought gets turned upside down. To read as Kieran slowly opens up to sweet and gentle Alex, I found myself falling in love with him to. The loving and respectful way he treated Alex in taking him step by step on what to watch out for in regards to meeting other gay men and helping build Alex's self-confidence.

I like how Alex was written with the naiveté of what a male/male relationship was like. His innocence helped make this budding relationship more believable when it came to his acceptance of the parameters of the relationship. He's twenty-one and still a virgin--who better than an experienced older man to help rid him of his virgin status and teach him the ropes along the way? So of course he would agree to whatever Kieran wanted to keep him in his life.

The best part about this story was all the dialogue between the characters. Definitely gave that extra zing to help carry this story along. I got to know more about the characters' personalitys from their conversations with one another and it made these fictional characters come to life.

This was a very entertaining book to read. Pairing up a virgin with an overly experienced partner is a love story just waiting to happen.
