Editorial Reviews

Review

I wish I had this back in '09 when I lived in a back-of-beyond Nanjing hotel on a diet of spicy noodles & rice crackers! Feasible, functional, fun & a great idea for frugal, health conscious travelers! --ChinaTravel.net, Aimee Groom, Editor

"Wow! I'll never look at a coffeepot the same way again!"--D.Davis --Diamond Davis, AmenraExpressions.com

From the Author

...In any event, I wrote this book to share the profound fulfillment and joy that comes from being able to survive and eat healthy meals while seeing the world, by stretching the limits of your creativity and innovating a bit....all on a shoestring budget. And you know what they say about innovation. In the famous words of Larry Ellison (Oracle co-founder, and likely a coffeepot enthusiast himself):

"When you innovate, you've got to be prepared for everyone telling you you're nuts." ~ Larry Ellison

More About the Author

Once upon a time, there was a civil engineer who hated his job, followed his passion, started a sideline business publishing his own books, made enough money to quit his job, ran away to a tropical island in the South Pacific, and started a tourism business so he could give tours of the island to pretty girls every day!"

A Columbia University graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering, Walt was, like many people, destined for a career in his profession of training. In fact, immediately after graduating, he accepted a job working in the Design Division of the Port Authority Engineering department on the 73rd floor of World Trade Center One. However, within the first fifteen minutes of this his first job in corporate America, Walt, frustrated by the monotony, restrictions of nine-to-five employment, realized beyond the shadow of a doubt, that he absolutely hated it!

It was several years until he was able to grow his sideline business in the music industry--a personal passion--and walk away from his career to become a full-time "passionpreneur." He authored several books on the music industry, created a brand of inspiration called "Life Rhymes," and launched dozens of websites, and unique products.

As he honed his experience and expertise in website development, internet marketing, creating the life of his dreams, and living true to himself, he developed a unique "Passion Profit Philosophy and Formula" and a coaching practice to help others do the same. In 1999, he published the formula in Turn Your Passion into Profit which, with yearly updates, has consistently sold in the top 50 in home-business books on Amazon.com.

In 2006, through a friend who had visited and raved about his experience, Walt "discovered" Saipan, booked a one-way ticket, and 2 months later, escaped from New York to live his nomadpreneur dream on this pacific island paradise.

Walt writes a weekly business column for the Saipan Tribune entitled " The Saipanpreneur Project." He has written Doing Business on Saipan to further encourage entrepreneurial activity on the island, and, with former garment factory worker Chun Yu Wang, co-authored Chicken Feathers and Garlic Skin: Diary of a Chinese Garment Factory Girl on Saipan and is the founder of Destination Saipan Marketing, Inc. Walt was recognized by official CNMI Senate Resolution No. 15-54 for his invaluable contributions to Saipan, its residents and economy.

Walt currently owns and operates over 50 websites, has written a total of 16 books, over 400 articles and almost 500 motivational poems.

Walt is originally from the island of Jamaica, and, you can read about his first year and impressions of his new island home in the book Jamaican on Saipan!

If you're looking for the REAL coffeemaker book, it's called, "Cooking Without a Kitchen: The Coffeemaker Cookbook" (1999) by Peter Mazonson, MD, MBA.

THIS listing, as far as I can tell, is using a percolator. There is another book which is PRICEY for what it is and is most likely "borrowing" from the "Cooking Without a Kitchen" book called "The Coffeepot Cookbook." Don't get snookered into getting that.

The ORIGINAL/REAL one, using a hotel coffeemaker and "supporting appliance (blow dryer)" --- "Cooking Without a Kitchen" includes the techniques and recipes using the built-in filter and carafe in the Mr. Coffee-type of maker. I own a hard copy of it but I think a Kindle version is also available on Amazon. It's the real deal and it's also hysterical to read (although the food is actually GOOD!).

I give this book five stars for innovation! It's an example of how someone can take what is at hand, and find a completely new use for it. Of course, it's not intended that you're going to go out and buy a coffeepot to fulfill your cooking needs, but it's a very useful guide as you travel and encounter hotel-room coffee pots that can become cooking pots. The book has five chapters, which cover 1. A bit of history of how the book came about, 2. Coffee pot basics, including types of coffee pots, 3. What you'll need, 4. Recipes, and 5. Other good ideas (like a good collection of spices to have on hand). It discusses some caveats about cooking starch, liquids and bases. The chapter on recipes has 13 recipes, all really well-illustrated. The recipes are vegetarian, and if you want some meat, I suppose you can toss some in. The tone of the book is lighthearted and good humored. At 52 pages, it's fairly easy to get through. If it saves you from eating out once, you've paid for the book! Overall, practical information and by an entertaining writer.

I found myself in a position a while back where I had to fend for myself (in terms of food) while at home. I thought that there was no better place to try out this book, and so took to it right away. The result was quite messy. You obviously need to practice to get it all done neatly. But in a bind, I say WHY NOT? I give this author a 4 out of 5 because of his creativeness in filling a need that all of us have experienced before. The family friendliness was a 3 out of 5 because I recall moments when I thought “that’s not something I’d want to say in front of kids.” Overall, great work Mr. Goodridge! I look forward to your other works.

I came across this book in a newsletter from Happy Cow (the global veggie restaurant guide) and ordered myself a copy. I really liked the tone of Walt's writing - it was witty, full of anecdotes and all-in-all a useful take on how to be able to eat well on a tight budget, while travelling. I found it an original and very personal book, and as a long-time vegan, I really appreciated that the recipes in the book were all veggie.

Can be recommended!
