First things first: this is not a substitute for Metcalf's 'Coinage of the Latin East' or Malloy's 'Coins of the Crusader States'. It does not try to comprehensively catalogue the corpus of Crusader coinage; rather, it seeks to place the currencies circulating in the Latin East in the context of the broader Mediterranean economy.

In order to achieve this, Azzopardi breaks his material down in to quite small chapters, each one dealing with a single political entity. The various Crusader states are all represented, as is Byzantium, the Seljuks of Rum, the various Moorish kingdoms in Spain and so forth. Representative coins of the state are featured, some in beautiful, page-sized photographs. A potted history is included, and the maps are beautiful: I found the maps of the Aegean states especially helpful, with the tiny (and to this Australian, obscure) territories clearly circled in red.

The result is not so much a book about coins, as a book which uses coins as a starting point for the exploration a world long gone; it is perhaps no coincidence that Azzopardi is a collector himself, and not merely a scholar. I purchased this book after already reading Metcalf and Malloy; ideally, one would start out with it. With a good understanding of the context in which the coins were struck, and a handy feel for the coins themselves, the collector could then move on to explore in detail the minituae of the helmeted bust series from Antioch or the smooth Tower of David deniers (with matching oboles, of course!) from Jerusalem.

The English version is let down by translation that is, in places, slightly clunky, and poor editing that sees whole paragraphs repeated. The production standards of the book are generally high, so these issues are particularly glaring.

In short, a delight: buy one for yourself and one for a gift! Four stars.
