Not much of a sequel..
on July 23, 2012
Unfortunately, this sequel did not live up to my expectations after finishing The Ocean Dark. I had hoped that the series would have followed Alena and her mysterious government agency, but instead, it followed Joshua Hart and his partner, Rachael Voss. Rogan moved them from the FBI to another, more unbelievable-sounding federal agency. Other than these two characters, the books are nothing alike. Here, the characters went from being placed in an action/adventure/thriller set with mysterious sea creatures to firmly in the midst of a conspiracy-driven political thriller. Even worse, everything about the plot was entirely predictable. Almost painfully predictable, to be honest. And for a "series" neither Hart nor Voss developed at all - though some of the new characters were rather likable. Rogan provided nothing in any of the characters to establish any kind of connection between reader and character. And the plot, for as predictable as it was, left some pretty gaping holes which made the entire book completely implausible. This will be my last book in this series.
