After a few chapters the story started to come together and got really intense. Great conspiracy story with wonderful characters. I will be looking for Jack Rogan for my next read.

Unfortunately, this sequel did not live up to my expectations after finishing The Ocean Dark. I had hoped that the series would have followed Alena and her mysterious government agency, but instead, it followed Joshua Hart and his partner, Rachael Voss. Rogan moved them from the FBI to another, more unbelievable-sounding federal agency. Other than these two characters, the books are nothing alike. Here, the characters went from being placed in an action/adventure/thriller set with mysterious sea creatures to firmly in the midst of a conspiracy-driven political thriller. Even worse, everything about the plot was entirely predictable. Almost painfully predictable, to be honest. And for a "series" neither Hart nor Voss developed at all - though some of the new characters were rather likable. Rogan provided nothing in any of the characters to establish any kind of connection between reader and character. And the plot, for as predictable as it was, left some pretty gaping holes which made the entire book completely implausible. This will be my last book in this series.

I read Jack Rogan's first novel, "The Ocean Dark", and thought it was good. Lots of action, creepy situations, promiising first thriller. I was eager to read his next effort, hoping to see a talented, new writer continue to improve. Alas, reality did not match the expectation. There was lots of action, but the premise was so ridiculous that I wanted to throw this piece of garbage out the window. When you find out what the conspiracy is, you will laugh out loud. IT is unbelievably stupid, and he attempts to provide no support whatsoever for his mysterious conspiracy theory. Don't waste your time or money on this, try some Rollins,David lynn Golemon, or Stephen Hunter if you want some good, old fashioned conspiracy theory shoot em ups.

All I can say I spent 2 sleepless nights reading this novel. After reading Ocean Dark I snagged this book in anticipation it would be at least eqaul to the author's first book. It was, and in some respects, better. Ocean Dark was an incredibly character driven book with with one hell of a Monster plot - literally. A few of the characters from Ocean Dark pleasantly spilled over into The Collective. And while The Collective does not have any monsters or supernatural elements, it was incredibly suspenseful . . . you just could not put the book down wanting to know more about the plot and the outcome of the perils these characters were in, or getting in. Again, the characters were my prime motivation to keep turning the pages. Another excellent novel by Jack Rogan!

2nd in series, stand alone story. Jack has created a group of villains that will really let your 'kill em all' side out.
