Book Description

November 1, 2005

The one book your family needs to understand the world of art. A beautiful, unusual and engaging compendium of art history, providing an accessible entree into the world of art for everyone, regardless of their experience.

From cave paintings to the Renaissance, Impressionism to Pop Art, The Collins Big Book of Art takes you on a journey through the history of art in a delightful and informative way. With more than 1200 works of art represented, this is both a coffee– table book and an educational experience; cross–referenced throughout, and including the following sections and features:

A Chronology spans the history of art, step by step, from 38,000 BC to the present. Pieces from around the world are juxtaposed to place them in historical context. Each is labelled with date, country, title, artist, materials, size and current location. In addition, each piece of art is tied to its movement and key themes, which are pursued in greater detail in the other sections of the book.

Turning Points, interspersed throughout the chronology, delve into both the major artistic movements and highlight the technical breakthroughs which changed how artists of the time worked, and affected how they saw the world. For example, the glass lens allowed more lifelike portraiture in the early Renaissance, the ability to put paint into tubes gave the Impressionists the freedom to work outdoors, and Freud's work in psychoanalysis had a major impact on Surrealism.

The second part of the book explores enduring Themes of art, taking a subject and showing how artists through the ages have depicted it. Various approaches to portraits and landscapes, allegory and religion, still life and abstraction are compared and contrasted, using carefully selected images to illuminate each point made.

In addition, an extensive Reference section allows the reader to access information in numerous ways; the multiple indices include a glossary of terms, artists registry, index of museums, and more.

With easy navigation and an engaging presentation of the material, The Collins Big Book of Art will inform, inspire, and entertain art enthusiasts at any level of understanding and appreciation.

5.0 out of 5 stars For anyone who appreciates art November 17, 2005
Format:Hardcover
This is a great book for anyone who wants to know a little (or a lot!) more about art. It has numerous illustrations, a timeline, and also goes into themes and how certain art movements have depicted a specific feature (eyes, for example). You can open the book to any page to get a quick glimpse and learn some fun facts, or you can read it from the beginning. The Collins Big Book of Art is beautiful and the best general book about art I've seen. I received it as a gift, and I'm going to be buying it for others this Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Timeline of the World's Art Treasures November 2, 2005
Format:Hardcover
Finally, a book that traces Art History from cave art until the 21st century and does so in a clear and organized manner. The glorious art works chosen to define different periods traces art history through specific eras and then interconnects each period with the past and the future. The illustrations selected by Dr. David Wilkins show the finest of the world's masterpieces and the accompanying descriptions further the reader's knowledge and appreciation. It should be noted that Dr. Wilkins was honored by the College Art Association this spring when he was presented with their 2005 Distinguished Teaching of Art History Award. One can read further about the award by going to [...] Gather the family together and enjoy the Collins Big Book of Art.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Big Book of Art December 1, 2008
Format:Hardcover
This is a great history book on art for like they say an overview from cave paintings to pop art. Most of the materials have been compiled before in several volumns on various topics so if you want it all in one spot and a general survey of it this is great. There is, however, a disconnect to the renaissance happening in Today's Art, both realistic traditional and digital contemporary. It seems just a tad superficial that you can cover art all in a one stop read method, so for people who really want to delve into a particular aspect of art you'll need to continue reading the separate references.

5.0 out of 5 stars Artistic Journey and Psychology of Art February 26, 2006
Format:Hardcover
This volume takes you through the history of art in a way that embraces the reader like none other. There is order here in the way the material is presented. It is very logical and helps explain quite a bit of what has gone on since the first artistic expressions were created. You can feel your way through history and find a clear development of artistic techniques and styles. There is a definite reason behind these and it is explained with great feeling. There is quite a bit of psychology about the subject matter of what is on the canvas. Why does an artist or group of artists choose to capture something in a particular way? This is a quite a book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really like it, but Not what I expected June 12, 2010
Format:Hardcover
The book is very well made and illustrated, and the quality of the images are excellent. However, I expected more of a text book, not an illustrated history of art, but overall it's a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book and quick shipping! December 20, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Awesome book! I originally purchased it to teach my young boys the basics about classical art and art history. I use it on rainy days as a source of scavenger hunts- I show them a page and give them 5 minutes to memorize as much on the page as they can. At the 5 minute mark, they have to regurgitate what they saw and what their impression of the art was. For each factoid they get a penny- not much money but enough to keep little boys interested. Better than just a coffee table book. Thanks!
