Book Description

February 4, 2010
We are at our best when we feel comfortable, confident and at ease-when we know we look fantastic. That's when we nail a presentation, land a job, snag a date, and click with friends-and yes, all of this can be influenced by color. There's a secret to knowing what to wear and when to wear it so that you can maximize any opportunity, whether it's in love, at work, or with family. The Color of Style will give you the key to harmonizing your wardrobe colors with what you wear every day: your very own body.

You have 8 basic colors. Here's what they are and how to find them:

There are 5 colors that express who you are:
* Your Essence Color: Your vulnerable color; your version of white, a skin tone that harmonizes the colors in the palm of your hand
* Your Romantic Color: Your passion color, your version of red found by gently pinching a fingertip-or the color of when you blush
* Your Dramatic Color: Your "look at me" color, your version of blue, found in the color of the veins in your wrist
* Your Energy Color: The color that supports you when you need a pick me up, taken from the darkest part of your iris (but not the ring around the iris)
* Your Tranquil Color: Your peaceful color, taken from the lightest part of your iris

And 3 neutral colors that complete your wardrobe basics:
* Your Version of Black: the most flattering dark color for you, taken from the ring around your iris
* Your Version of Brown: a more casual, medium-dark shade, taken from the darkest part of your hair
* Your Version of Khaki: your best light color, taken from the lightest part of your hair

David Zyla's system shows how to wear each of these colors-as an accent in a print, an accessory, or a solid, and solves the mystery of what color to wear to any life event, from formal to casual, from job interview to first date. The Color of Style will tell you what colors your winter coat should be, your spring sweaters, your summer dresses, your business suit and your black tie outfit (stay tuned, because it's probably not black). Armed with the 8 colors, and your style DNA archetype (you have 24 to choose from), you'll spend less on clothes because you'll make fewer mistakes. And if you've already made a few bad choices, The Color of Style will show you how to fix them without spending a dime.

David Zyla's mission is to show you how to color yourself with your own pop- from-the-pack brand and what colors to wear to attract love, enhance your power, restore your energy, make a lasting impression, and show the world who you really are.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Recognize yourself in any of Zyla’s archetypes, a fashion concept that builds on the “what season are you?” clothes-color theory? Readers will immediately turn to descriptions of the 24 archetypes and figure out if they’re an “Early Spring” or a “Jeweltone Summer,” a “Bronze Autumn” or an “Antique Winter.” The author’s real purpose here is to help you discover your authentic style to attract love, enhance your power, restore your energy, make a lasting impression, or show the world who you really are. This is accomplished by way of real-life dialogues with his clients, examples of applications, charts to keep color scores, and tips and hints throughout. Written in a colloquial style, Zyla even accompanies you on a closet purging and a shopping expedition, pointing out the way one’s emotions block rational decision making with excuses such as “It costs too much money to discard” or “My husband/wife bought it for me.” Like having a personal fashion advisor on hand, The Color of Style lacks only one thing: illustrations to make the invisible visible. --Barbara Jacobs

Review

"David's eye for color, style and shape is extraordinary, and his sense of style is always exciting. What I really love about The Color of Style is that he's found a way to make every woman feel like the best possible version of herself."
-Susan Lucci

"David didn't just give me a better sense of my own style; he didn't just save me from years of wardrobe fumbling. The palette he gave me represented a turning point: a decision to look and act like myself and see how much farther that would get me."
-Aaron Shure, Executive Producer, Everybody Loves Raymond

More About the Author

Emmy Award® winner David Zyla has been a pioneer of authentic style on the runway, television, and Broadway for twenty years. "When I was only five, my parents would ask for my opinion on what to wear whenever they had a special event." This later developed into a philosophy that has given him the opportunity to help thousands of people discover their authentic style and make a mark in all areas of the fashion and design world. Besides being an author, he is a sought after stylist with a background which includes designing the ABC daytime dramas General Hospital, Port Charles and All My Children for which he received the 2010 Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design Emmy Award® as well as five prior nominations. 5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a gem March 16, 2010

I picked this book up while looking for another title in the "color analysis" section at my local bookstore and I realized right away that THIS was the book I was really looking for! If you know your season, this book will have you seeing "your" colors in amazing new ways. If you don't know your season or have been color typed but feel like something is missing, you need this book even more. After reading this you will know not only what your true colors are but how to incorporate them into your life to enhance your well being. I would recommend buying this together with Lora Alexander's book "Color Revival", Once you use David's book to determine/confirm your season and best colors, Lora's book will help you confirm your choice and expand your palette.

Note - this book contains NO color charts or color illustrations, which I actually think is a big plus, it forces you to follow the exercises to determine your best colors instead of turning to the charts as a short cut. If you already have seasonal swatches you can use them to complete the exercises (though if you are like me and had an old set from the 80s you might be surprised at which colors are missing), the author recommends that you use paint chips (available free at home improvement stores), some stores will let you "check out" a paint swatch book library style which would be the perfect tool for use with this book.

This book and Color Revival by Lora AlexanderColor Revival: Understanding the 12 Season Color Analysis System (Volume 1) are the best books in print on color analysis. I highly recommend both!

I love this book! It has helped me understand color and clothing like never before. The ideas about color coincide with the almost unconscious sense of what has been going on when I wear certain colors. Now I can focus on 8 main colors and use them consciously and consistently. The impact on my work days was immediate and when I come home, I can snuggle into my "essence" color and relax. Finding and using my dramatic color was an epiphany--my only problem is in turning the energizing effect off!

With this knowledge I have a clear sense of what colors to use in what capsules/areas of my life, allowing me to have separate capsules in my wardrobe that function at a deep level.

This book also explains the impact of how these colors effect me in my environment through color choices I've made in paint and the objects around me. I plan to be playing with the ideas in this book for a long time!

1.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, didn't help me at all January 21, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had big hopes for this book because it looked fun and was by a "fashion expert." But unfortunately, the expert specializes in Costume Design for daytime television.

I found the book to be too complicated for my needs. There are no thoughtful applications for ordinary humans. For example, he describes the "Must-Haves" of one style as "a hooded overcoat with toggles, stirrup leggings, a tie-front blouse worn under a jumper, a pencil skirt with buttons up the side, and a finewale corduroy shirtdress . . . a dress made of light-handed tweed and accessorized with items such as a boucle cloche hate or a pair of whip-stiched gloves . . . a cute little sixties shift dress with a beret . . ." (pp. 132-133).

Even if I wanted to wear this stuff, where would I find clothes like this? Ah, the costume department of a soap opera.

Very disappointed that this did not help me more. Just out-of-touch with typical women and their lives.
