The thinking person's coloring book is the best way to describe this coloring book. This book invites, urges and requires the artist to THINK about COLOR. No popular television or movie or licensed characters here. Follow the directions and you will have to consider COLOR and all its shades and hues.

Some examples:

A series of empty circles progress across the page and the directions say, "Color the shapes, from light to dark and back again." It allows the choice of color to the artist.

Outlined numbers from 0-9 overlap like a collage in the center of the page. The directions ask, "How old are you? Color in the right number" The eye has to isolate the number.

The pages are part puzzle, part I Spy, and engage higher level thinking.

One page features two triangular warning road signs with the symbol for "road work,"one to be colored (probably) in yellow. Do kids notice that warning signs are yellow? Clever! Those directions call on previous knowledge of road signs. Then the second one is labeled: Color in "holiday" colors! The choice of holiday is yours.

A maze that appears to be a tangle of spaghetti invites the artist to select a strand and follow its twistings and turnings with their crayon.

A page of flags from around the world invites a dip into a World Almanac or some other reference source to discover the colors.

Visual discernment, color selection, creativity, higher level thinking, and the imagination, are all engaged between the covers of this delightful volume. Some children might need help reading the instructions.

Is the world ready for a coffee table-worthy coloring book? Well, that's what we have on our hands here. Inventive, beautiful, and inspiring, it stands head and shoulders above the traditional. The Coloring Book should be given out with vaccinations. While not suitable for a library collection, Tullet's book is an unquestionably wonderful choice for the children you know.

When you title your coloring book "The Coloring Book" you'd better create something definitive. No disappointments here. In appearances, The Coloring Book is one man going wild with a Sharpie. Full of doodles, activities, designs, and full-blown original characters, it makes you begin to wonder why all coloring books can't be like this. Each turn of the page uncovers something that kids won't be able to resist.

Tullet has created a long line of coloring and activity books for both French and American audiences. This is his forte, and it shows. He has a knack for turning the ordinary into something special. Take for example, the page at the beginning of the book with three overlapping oblong areas labeled yellow, red, blue. The text encourages readers to "See what happens when you mix the colors". A simple, instructive, fun way to start out a coloring book. The pages that follow are full of these moments that encourage interaction and creativity.

Beautiful to look at, fun to use. Clear space on the coffee table.

On Amazon I was looking for a coloring book to send to a person who is confined to a jail. I read the reviews and couldn't resist buying this for her. She has received it and has written to thank me many times. She writes that it has given her many hours of pleasure and this book has been a Godsend to her. The last few letters she has traced from the Coloring book to make stationary. What a gift to me as well as the receiver. This was money well spent.

I have heard so much from her in regards to this book that I am ordering 3 more. One for me, my daughter and her daughter. I can't wait for my own coloring book to come. That says a lot for a 57 year old Grandma. It's good to feel young again and I do look forward to my new coloring book as well as my daughter and her daughter. Thanks Herve Tullet, the author of this coloring book.

This won't be my last order of these coloring books.

My daughter got this coloring book when she was 3. She loved it, was absorbed and went back to it over and over. It is much more intersting than a typical coloring book. We loved to colour it, too.

I bought this for my 7-year old nephew. It's not your usual coloring book and thus offers a more exciting rainy day activity. The graphics are great!

I love this book. I love how thick and heavy it is. I love that you don't have to be "good at coloring" to create something beautiful within its already striking pages. At first, I was afraid to color in it because I didn't want it to get used up– I loved it so much –but my husband convinced me to, saying, "You can always buy another one when you're finished." And I love it so much I probably will.

The pages are a heavier weight than a typical coloring book, but not heavy enough for my artist markers not to bleed through. I guess the best medium to use would be crayon, but I'll try some weaker markers – I really want my colors to pop.

I want to buy another copy of this book to give to my younger cousin, who has a beautifully creative mind, but doesn't think she's very good at art. But it would be a great gift for an adult, too.
