Book Description

April 18, 2012
"The Colors of Love" Treasured wisdom on the family. One of the finest books of its kind to appear in recent times. Parents will want this book, not only to read for themselves from cover to cover, but to read to their children to create the warm family love so insightfully described on page after page. We have long known that Black wisdom informs much of the most profound thinking on the family. It has taken the insight and devotion of Alan J. Inman to gather this wisdom in one place. "If you can't run your own house, you can't run the White House...so we've adjusted our schedules to make sure that our girls are first... I get them off, I go and do trips, I'm home before bedtime...They just know that I was at home to tuck them in at night, and it keeps them grounded, and children, the children in our country, have to know that they come first." -Michelle Obama, First Lady. Alan Inman develops a biographical profile of his life in "The Colors of Love" that presents the different shades. Some of it is bright and wonderful while other parts show the stark reality of a black man that had to confront a life of inter-generational fatherlessness. The heart that Inman developed through this experience ultimately led him to become the national director of the Institute for Responsible Fatherhood & Family Revitalization. His commentary reflects his own life's episodic experience as it is juxtaposed with different disciplines associated with African American History. Inman adds a compilation of quotes on family he selects from notable personalities of African American History providing the reader with the lens of both a contemporary & historical context of family life. "The Colors of Love" is a book that can find itself just as comfortably in school libraries as a reference document as it would be in a home for inspirational reading by families or as a rich source of material for speeches or lectures. Alan Inman's The Colors of Love contributes well to an emerg

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Blending of Love Possibilities December 7, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Mr. Inman shares an outstanding blend of micro (personal) and macro (life in general) perspectives on what we can learn from our personal experiences and life regarding the power of love. I really enjoyed the integration of quotes and perspectives from others as intervention tools to further emphasize a key nugget. The personal sharing brought the human touch which I find to bring meaning to the subject matter at hand. One of my friends used the book as a point of healing after the loss of her mother.

How often do you come by a book that you can read in one setting? Alan Inman's "The Color of love: Treasured Wisdom on the Family" shares a special story about his life. Part Auto-biography, part-folklore, there are many lessons to be learned.

Alan Inman's approach is like that of an older, wiser, relative. He reflects on his life - both the lightness and darkness, Joy and pain - almost in a way that says `learn from my lessons'; you can almost feel his pain when he reflects on the generational absence of father's from his family including his own absence from his son. You can also feel his intense joy when he speaks about the second chance he had to be a father, and how maturity, god-centered focus, and a shift in priorities allowed him to do for Alena, what he couldn't do for Todd.

The book was not only a personal reflection by Alan Inman. Alan collected quotes about family from our African ancestors, historical black leaders, religious figures, sport legends, colleagues, family, and entertainers. There was a trend between all of these people - family should be a priority in our lives.

Alan also included personal family pictures, which was fun to look at, and refreshing for a book. It helped me as a reader to feel personally connected.

All in All, I really enjoyed reading this book. It's not very often that you learn a little something about the author and also about yourself.

I give Color of Love four stars!!
