5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Quick, Middle Grade Adventure!! February 5, 2013
I enjoyed Colossus Rises!

While some may not like it, I felt it was a fun and eventful book that is surely going to excite those who are fans of Percy Jackson or Charlie Bone. While it may by no means be Harry Potter (honestly, what is?) it was a great adventure that I'm sure fans of HP can appreciate and fans of PJ will completely love!

Colossus Rises is def for a younger audience which is obvious through it's writing style and character dialogue, but it was still an intelligent book andthough it was yes, childish at times, I made sure to remember that it WAS a child's book and took it with a grain of salt(is that the saying? hrm)

All of the characters introduced where fun and added to make the world much more developed, but with that being said, I would have liked more of the universe of the Seven Wonders to have been more fleshed out but I assume that will be done in the next 6 books!

Over all, this book is for those who are looking for a fun, VERY fast paced read filled with magic and adventure, tons of humor and a little danger to keep you on your toes.

I can not wait for the sequel and recommend it for anyone looking to get a younger person into reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! February 12, 2013
By L. Dean
I teach 5th grade and got a sample of this book for free. I sometimes get bored with kids' books but not this one! It's very action packed, which is great for kids because slow spots in books are no good for them, and they often quit. This book is for the more fluent reader; the vocabulary is a little advanced for a reader who struggles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hooked! March 5, 2013
By MarKay
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book had me hooked in the first chapter. I started recommending this to everyone at the start of chapter two. I read until dawn because there wasn't a good spot to pause and sleep, trust me I tried but I kept turning the lamp on. Its a must read for Harry Potter and Children of the Lamp fans. The writting style and over all feel of this book translated perfectly into a movie in my head. I recomend starting this book in the afternoon and never letting a child start it on a school night. I would have read by flash light under the covers way past bed time if I was still a child. It would be a great summer read for kids.

I picked up this book after finishing the last Riordan book. I was a little hesitant at first, not having read anything but this author. First chapter was a little slow to start, but as I continued into the story I was hooked. I loved the use of Atlantean backdrop, as segue into the Seven Wonders of the World. I think the book is fast paced and well written, the story flowing easily and addictively. I would definitely read this book with my class and can't wait for the next in the series. Other reviewers complaining about the detail, is misleading. I do not feel that the details detracted from the readability but rather established a colorful imagery to the story. I especially liked that the protagonist is not the one with all the power/brains/brawn but rather the "thread" that ties all the characters together. I for one am now going to explore other works from this author! Great Adventure!

5.0 out of 5 stars if you like Percy Jackson books! February 5, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book was well written, exciting, and incorporated ancient civilizations/mythology into a story that takes place in the present day. Fans of Percy Jackson and the Heros of Olympus series will love reading this book and following this series over the next six books.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read June 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I read and listened to this book on my Kindle which may account for some of the comments I make below.

This is the story of Jack McKinley and some others kids who find out that they the descendants of Atlantians and are all about to die, oh but they all get superpowers before they kill over. It may not sound like it, but I liked this book. It’s very middle grade and sometimes annoying, but overall quite entertaining. When I first heard of this new series it was compared to the Percy Jackson series, but I don’t think that is a good comparison. I think this story is something a little different.

The only character I really fell in love with in this first book, I haven’t read the others yet, is Jack. Not that the other characters weren’t likable, but Jack was the only one who seemed to be in touch with reality. He seemed accessible to me beyond this world of mythology and magic in a way none of the other characters were.

While this story is very clever and full of action, is lacks sophistication and with good reason. This is a story about kids battling against the world to save their lives. These are not hormonal teens, yet, caught up in adult activities, but kids just trying to get through the day. I like that there is a real sense of innocence to this story that many middle grade and YA story just don’t have.
The mysteries, the history, and all the clues of this story were really cool. Some things were a discovery for me while quite a few were not. It didn’t take me long to figure out what was happening each time a new problem arose, but I will admit there were some turns I didn’t see coming.

The descriptions in this story and the world building were pretty good, but sometimes I had trouble figuring out which literal direction things were happening in.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great!
Really good! Too much cliffhanging, though. Wish the books would come out faster too. A lot. It's infuriating how slow they come out.
