Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Here is a book for fans of actor Peter Falk and lovers of his television series Columbo , now being revived as part of a TV mystery movie series. The show was high in ratings from 1968 to 1978. This book covers the beginnings of the show and relates inside details about the star and the producers. Further chapters give a synopsis of each show, the cast, and comments about the production. Final chapters list Columbo books and classic Columbo lines. This is a reasonably well-written book that gives much detail about a TV program that some consider a classic. Though not a necessary purchase for public libraries, those catering to TV and mystery fans may want to buy it.

I refer to the book many times when I watch Columbo episodes I've taped over the years. I think it's a great book, but like others, I think it should either be updated, or a sequel book, possibly titled "The Columbo Phile - Just One More Thing" that just covers the newer cases and updates the statistics (such as how many times William Shatner has been a murderer on Columbo, which used to be 1 and now is 2). Maybe they could use color photos in it, too.

The indispensable guide to America's greatest television detective, "The Columbo Phile" is a must-have for any fan. It includes detailed episode summaries, behind-the-scenes production information, and interviews with many of the guest murders including Leonard Nimoy, Richard Kiley and Robert Conrad. The writers, creators, and directors are all heard from, and there are extensive quotes from Peter Falk himself that show just how much he cared about the character and the series.

The book details the original run of Columbo episodes, beginning with the made-for-TV movie "Prescription: Murder" and ending with "The Conspirators." Although the 1980's revival (beginning with "Columbo Goes to the Guillotine" and ending in the 2000's with "Columbo Likes the Nightlife") is mentioned, the book was published before any of the new episodes aired, so information on them is not included.

Whatever price you can find it at is well worth it!

This fine book shows just the sort of attention to detail the great detective would appreciate. It is a work of love, and is a good read for any fan of Columbo. The only problem is that the book is a little out of date now - well over a dozen episodes have screened since the last one listed. A new edition is in order. Please, please, give us the REST of the story!

I grew up a big fan of Columbo. The show is still running in syndication and this book is a little treasure of information for each episode (excluding the few made in the early 90's since the book was published in the mid 80's). Going beyond IMDB, you get a small back story on each episode and main character from the perspective of those that actually wrote and directed them. Expensive but worth the money if you want a little something extra the internet cannot provide on this fantastic program

This book is terrific fun, marred only by the unjustified political criticism of one particular episode (never mind that Columbo is a remarkably non-politicized series). The book consists of film credits and plot summaries followed by key features of the writing, filming, and production of each episode, with comments by the lead actors and sometimes by Falk himself. Written by a critic who loves and understands the show, with an assessment of where each episode fits into the general Columbo 'files'. Oddly, he seems to approve of a peculiarly self-spoofing episode, 'Last Salute To The Commodore', which many fans find baffling as well as off-putting ('were they on drugs when they shot this?' is a typical question they ask). Lots of b&w photos throughout. Doesn't cover the 'Revival' series of the 90s, which is just as well. Worth owning if you're a fan of the show, but out of print and hard to find.

Like everyone else has said.......the perfect companion to THE BEST most entertaining mystery show ever on television...........the insights and anecdotes are enlightening, I only wish the book could be updated to include the 1988 and after TV movies which I'm watching now as well.........can not recommend the book enough, as well as Dawidziaks Kolchak series companion!
