"Diane Melville is my hero and honestly this book is my new favorite! What I love is that she knows her stuff because she lived it! I recommend this book to all students who want to save 40,000 plus dollars by getting their Associates Degree in addition to being admitted to their dream school. I also recommend this book to all community college advisors that work with transfer students. The community college advantage is really a game changer because it makes everyone realize that community colleges are pathways to the Ivy League and all schools! " - Ellen Goldberg, District Director of Transfer Programs and Services at the City Colleges of Chicago

The book will answer several questions on the minds of high school seniors who want to apply to their local community colleges but are uncertain about opportunities and advantages that a community college education might offer them.

Melville explains the benefits of going to community college and what prospective students need to know about the experience. She argues that going to community college and transferring to a four year school is a great way to cut costs and find more educational flexibility. She offers tips on successful program construction, getting financial aid, where to transfer, and how to get into the top schools. A final chapter focuses on career planning and thinking about employment. She also provides a resource guide to financial aid and other resources. M

Suggests ways students can make the most of their time in community college and ease their transfer to a four-year institution or job.

With the student loan debt surpassing the credit card debt in this country, Diane's book could not come at a better time. As her former teacher, I am extremely proud of her for sharing her pragmatic tips with today's youth. I plan on sharing her book with as many students and parents as I can.

Reading this book is like having a friend who's been through college and is willing to tell you everything you need to know about getting there yourself and being successful, too. As a "first gen" college student, no one in my family could do that for me, and when I graduated high school, I only heard of two or three people I knew of going to college. They were each very exceptional students, and I figured that for someone like me, college wasn't something I could ever hope to aim for, since I didn't have exceptional grades or any financial help. But this book helped change my mind! I graduated high school seven years ago with no idea of what to do, just working lousy jobs and struggling financially. Now, with help from the advice in this book, I am starting my first semester this month at a community college and I have plans to transfer into a four-year school.

I can't thank the author enough. I knew absolutely nothing about how I could get started or that I could get enough financial help to even try. The book had so much helpful information for someone who had no clue where to start and a head full of misconceptions about community college. I really relate to the author's upbringing and stories, and the book is well-written, organized and easy to read. The tips on getting out there and advice on how to get the most out of your time in community college are great. If I hadn't followed the advice of getting to know some advisers and counselors, I never would have figured out which degree to go for or gotten so much help getting through last-minute registration and picking classes. Definitely follow her advice on getting registered early! Classes do fill up very quickly.

College is a completely different beast than high school. There's more going on behind the scenes than inside the class room. The worst feeling ever is thinking you're doing everything that needs to be done, and coming to the realization you are miles behind your peers. The worst part is it really isn't your fault, some of us don't have the support system in their lives to help guide them through college.

Being a first generation college student I don't have much guidance on what should be done in college, and vital steps in the process are extremely easy to miss if you aren't aware of them. The Community College Advantage does a great job of highlighting these steps, and guides you through them with a very casual writing style that makes the seemingly overwhelming task seem less difficult. There's a lot of insight in this book that will seem very obvious to you after you read it (but never heard anyone suggest before), and also tricks you couldn't have imagined unless someone told you first.

If you're choosing the community college route (which more and more people are doing these days), especially being a first gen college student, this book is definitely worth picking up. It gives you the much need coaching of someone who has "been there" and lays it all out for your convenience. The guidance it provides will make you more confident that what you are doing right, and you won't miss a vital step in the process and come to the horrible realization you are months behind where you should be.

This book is a gift for students and parents looking for more options than the terrible advice of, "going to college means going into debt."

The Community College Advantage is written by someone who knows current technology, admissions practices, and values money. It makes me sad to hear of how much debt our students carry in attempt to educate themselves. This book offers solutions, how-to's, and valuable experience. Most importantly, it removes the stigma that Community College is for the professionally lost, poor or those who can't hack it in four year university. The smartest people value time and money, this guide gets you the most education for the best price and teaches you how to move beyond Community College into any four year university.

I'm glad I read this book. I'm glad it gives real, actionable advice and helped me see a path to education without the fear of life-long debt.

This book is truly a must-read guide for scholarships. It breaks down the intimidating scholarship world into an easily navigable process, complete with helpful tips and advice on all aspects of finding and applying for financial aid. From basic things such as the various types of financial aid and where to look to find it, to tips on organization and time management to valuable resources that students likely didn't know they had. Overall, tons of invaluable information on getting financial aid, all in one straightforward, easy-to-read guide.

I really recommend this book to students and parents that want to save money on college tuition without compromising their academic goals and aspirations! This is especially helpful for those who plan to attend community college and then transfer to a 4-year university.
