Editorial Reviews

The Company You Keep stars Robert Redford, Shia LaBeouf, Nick Nolte, Brit Marlng and many more. The thriller centers on a former Weather Underground activist who goes on the run from a journalist who has discovered his identity. The score is composed by film music sensation Cliff Martinez (Arbitrage, Drive, Contagion...). It is heavily electronica influenced and is one of Cliff's best work to date.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Company You Keep April 26, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Cliff Martinez is all about subtlety. To the uninitiated, his scoring work might seem too minimalistic, somehow not palpable or demonstrative enough to bear the weight of a film's narrative. And yet, he's proven time and time again that even in the midst of his serene ambient electronic sound, there exists a heart-wrenching beauty that somehow is able to convey a sense of vivid color and elaborate texture. Martinez's music bridges the gap between most contemporary film scoring and passionate mood, making each of his efforts unique and instilling them with a sustained and treasured efficacy. The Company You Keep, a political thriller directed by Robert Redford, and based on the book by Neil Gordon, showcases another successful film score by Martinez. Its welcoming foundation, built upon legacy Martinez instrumentation, is furthered by strong thematic material and a writhing sense of escapism.

From the very beginning of the score, there can be no doubt of Martinez being at the helm. Layering of guitar, bass, and electronic synth is the central focus of much of the score, presented in various volumes and levels of reverb. The primary melodies normally present themselves at a somewhat plodding pace, which only gilds the effectiveness of Martinez's music by adding a sense of trepidation. "We Could Have Made a Difference" introduces the score's unique electronic theme, a mysterious and soothing keyboard sequence resembling a pacified version of Martinez's Contagion material. The theme's looping and idyllic nature helps to lend The Company You Keep a fledgling independence, especially when it's inserted at unexpected moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Headphone Commute Review May 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Perhaps one of the most celebrated soundtracks in the modern classical and ambient communities is that of Solaris by Cliff Martinez. But it's not all that this former Red Hot Chilly Peppers drummer is known for. His first film score was composed in 1989 for Sex, Lies, And Videotape, and while working with the same producer, Steven Soderbergh, Martinez produced soundtracks for Traffic (2000), above mentioned Solaris (2002) and Contagion (2011). In 2012 Martinez joins director Robert Redford for a soundtrack to a political action thriller, The Company You Keep.

The fifteen tracks on The Company You Keep create a moody and tense atmosphere ranging from minimal background cinematic themes to building storms in scale, rhythm and volume, in some cases employing a filtered synth bassline for added anxiety. The sonic environment is often distressed, at times cold and industrial, yet somehow always subsiding into a warm plateau of organic strings, lush pads and piano. This theme of emotions can cycle multiple times within each track, accompanying a fast-paced story line, flickering somewhere beneath your closed eyelids.

"The Company You Keep, like many of Robert Redford's films, felt like real life," said Martinez "100% all-natural and authentic people in extraordinary circumstances. [...] The score had to be low-calorie and unobtrusive but always meaningful and serving a dramatic function. This is the type of film that I'm most at home with."

The compact disc release appears courtesy of Milan Records, which previously brought us soundtracks to City of God (2003), Miyazaki`s Spirited Away, (2001), as well as Max Richter`s Sarah's Key (2011) and Clint Mansell`s Stoker (2013). The film, The Company You Keep, opened in theaters on April 5th, 2013, presented by Sony Pictures Classics. The label plans on following up the CD release with a 180g vinyl. Definitely recommended!

Just a quick note on his past work as a film composer: I first noticed Cliff Martinez when I saw the 2011 film "Drive". Yes, that film relies heavily on music from other artists, but the underscore provides much of the atmosphere that makes the film so successful. Shortly after, "Contagion" was released - another film for which he composed the score. The first sequence of that film features the track "They're Calling My Flight", which I consider to be Martinez's single best piece of music (it's worth checking out if you haven't heard it).
Drive (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Contagion: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Now, as for this score for "The Company You Keep": I like it a lot. The style that I'm used to hearing from Martinez is very much present and blends nicely with the more classical aspects of the music. In my opinion, the score compliments the dramatic and suspenseful elements of the film. Some of the tracks aren't particularly interesting to listen to out of context, but many are (and I've listed three of them below).

I wouldn't say this is the best work from Martinez, but it fits the movie well and is one of the better film scores I've listened to so far this year.
