I have read most of katie macalister's books and liked the humor in it. the silliness of the books were funny and the characters' adulthood wasn't questionable. In this book, I felt like I was reading a racy young adult novel. The jokes in the book were over the top like she was trying too hard to make readers laugh but it came off as immature. i rolled my eyes so many times reading this book. This book is a spin off from her young adult series and she should have kept it there.

In the Company of Vampires follows Fran as she returns to the Circus of the Darned and is reunited with her teenage flame Ben. Fran's mother is missing and the hysterical Viking ghosts have reappeared forcing Fran to return to the goth faire and forcing her to deal with Ben the hunky dark one who she is eternally linked to.

This book is written in Katie MacAlisters classic style which readers will either love or hate. The writing is silly and laugh out loud absurd and full of steamy sex and crazy co-stars.

I have not read the previous YA stories about Ben and Fran and felt like I was playing catchup the ENTIRE book. I don't like to read too much about a book before I read it because I want to be surprised by what happens. I wish I would've read reviews on this book before I read it. This was NOT a Dark One's novel. This was a continuation of her YA fiction. None of the other previous characters from Dark One's novels were around and I feel a little cheated. She did not lay out the steps of becoming a Beloved like she has in other novels and I just didn't feel like this fit into the series.

This is #8 in the Dark Ones series, and an all grown up continuation of the Goth Faire series under the pen name Katie Maxwell. This book takes place approximately 6 years after the events in Circus of the Darned. Fran has now finished college and is making plans to join her Dad's internet company. She hasn't seen Ben in several years, and in fact, had told him about a year prior that they were done and over.

What I really liked about this book was the return of the all the great secondary characters from the first 2 books. They really provided quite a bit of extra comic relief. Additionally, there were tie in characters from other books in the Dark Ones universe. I like following characters as they move from book to book in the series, even if they are the main characters.

As far as Fran and Ben's relationship goes, it starts out rather rocky. I will try not to give any big spoilers, but there was a moment when I really wondered if Fran and Ben were actually going to get together. Thankfully Fran's character has truly grown and matured in the years since the YA books and she actually listened to the explanation and trusted in her Dark One. Though I will say, that Ben should have spent a bit more time with the groveling.

Overall this was a good book and a great wrap up to the the YA books. Katie MacAlister left us with enough loose ends to spin a couple more Dark One books, but enough resolution to see that Fran and Ben were headed firmly into their HEA.

I love the characters in the books by this author. She spins the tale of several generations and species of family. They seem like a paranormal yet caring family. Love her writing. can hardly wait for the next ones out.

In the Company of Vampires is typical zany Katie MacAlister. Sometimes her heroine's wacky chicklity angst and goofy side characters work for me and other times they don't. For the most part they worked for me this time round. I haven't read the Fran and Ben YA books (Circus of the Darned and Got Fangs) by MacAlister's alter ego Katie Maxwell, but that didn't pose a problem for picking up on the drama which has kept Fran from fighting her destiny as Ben's Beloved in this latest Dark Ones tale.

I did enjoy the first 2/3rds of the story though, as jealousy spurs Fran to take a new look at decisions she'd made about her relationship with Ben. And I thought that the oh-so-inappropriate Viking ghosts were a hoot - though much of the humor associated with them involves conquests of the carnal kind and much talk about man parts, which will likely be way TMI(too much information) for any young readers who have read the earlier Ben and Fran books. Still, it is likely that the older Ben and Fran fans will be glad to see the very adult beginning of their happily ever after. But when all was said and done, other than finally hooking up Fran and Ben the story really didn't go anywhere background plotwise with shapeshifters being kidnapped and In the Company of Vampires ended up feeling like 'part one of two'.

If you love Katie MacAlister's Dark Ones, you are really in for a treat. They just keep better and better, and even if you love Fran, you will still want to take Ben home for yourself!

I must start off by saying that I have enjoyed a couple of Katie Macalisters books. For example, Sex And the Single Vampire, was great! I aslo liked the Silver Dragon series. However, this book I was unable to get into. It started off great but once i got to the sixth chapter or so, it began to snowball down hill fastly. I hate to give bad reviews, because i know how hard authors work, but I truly felt that i needed to let people know not to waist there money. Despite the fact that I liked the character's Fran and Ben, the story just plain sucked. I think that the few people who did like it probably dont have too high of standards. When I , myself, read a book I want it to have the "WOW" factor. Or, the "I cant beleive she went there" factor. This book had none of that and I literally had to MAKE myself finish it and let me tell you, that was a chore. A chore that had to be done to give a fair review.

Don't buy this book unless your easy to please or you have no quams about blowing money. You don't have to buy all her books just to be a true fan. Sometines, there just that bad. This is one of those that are just that bad!

SORRY KATIE.
