I definitely would recommend this book to anyone of the age to start bone density testing, but I would urge women and men in their 30s and 40s to get educated.

At age 60, I was informed by my doctor that I had Osteoporosis. Now, at age 61, I have bought and read all of the books on this topic at Amazon. THE COMPLETE BOOK OF BONE HEALTH by Diane L. Schneider, M.D. is the BEST of ALL of the books I bought (25 or more!). It is so good that I bought a second book and took it into my Family Practice Doctor (who also has osteoporosis, and could learn more).

This book is: comprehensive; easily read; includes studies to match up the information given; and includes individual cases. It is over 400 pages long and worth every penny; although I consider it a bargain. In addition, it is up-to-date (September, 2011). On page 256 it talks about new drugs being currently studied. I cannot say enough. This book defines knowledge on a topic most doctors can't or won't discuss at length. There are no easy answers to Osteoporosis, but I highly suggest this book if you wish good solid information.

What I like about this book is that it includes an emphasis on men's bone health. The author says, "Osteoporosis is arguably the most understudied and underdiagnosed disease in men." I also appreciate Dr. Schneider's comments about exercise, nutrition and alternative medicine. This is a well-researched and easy-to-read book.

I think the book is fantastic!

Perfect in the sense that it is suitable for a lay person and can take them about as far as they want or need to go into the science.

I think the set up of the Contents is really good. It shows that the answers to questions you have been thinking about are inside.

My wife is on Actonel and she told me to order her another copy so she take it to her next appointment with her Doctor and give it to her.

My daughter, a brand new (PharmD) looked at the book for quite a while and was very impressed. She said that she was not expecting it to go as deep as it does. She says she thinks it is very suitable for a medical professional to use to refresh themselves quickly. She is going to keep a copy close by.

I am giving this book to everyone in my family. It addresses a topic that most people ignore. Having good bone health is within everyone's reach. It is like having the specialtist (Dr. Schneider) in your own home patiently explaining what you need to know to reach this goal. Sure, there is plenty of technical stuff for the Doctors who will read this; but, she writes so that we all can understand and learn from it. She even summarizes each topic with what she calls The Bare Bones, in case you missed the key points of the chapter. It is a great reference book.

An 'accidental' recipient of this new book, I received it from the husband of the author, whom I met at a classic British car show. You never know when or how valuable information will come your way!
Whether you're new to the subject of osteoporosis or at least moderately well informed as I was, I agree with other reviewers that this book will take you as far as you want to go. It answered many of the nagging questions I hadn't seen addressed in my online research.
The section on health problems and medicines affecting your bones was especially useful. Everything in the body is so inter-related, and so few references attempt to explain health issues in the greater context of staying well. I also liked the objective assessment on bone density testing.
I definitely would recommend this book to anyone of the age to start bone density testing, but I would urge women and men in their 30s and 40s to get educated. Osteoporosis definitely seems to be one of those conditions best prevented.

Dr, Schneider's book, Bone Health, is a major contribution to understanding what we need to maintain healthy bones throughout our lives. Two years ago a bone density scan revealed I had osteopenia. My mother had osteoporosis. Bone Health reveals some of the things I've already been doing such as weight-bearing exercises, more calcium and vitamin D intake. However, Dr. Schneider, in a succinct, clear and understandable way, gives us information on all the medications available and some of the cutting edge treatments in development. This book is a must-read for both men and women of all ages. I'm sharing it with my daughter.

Prevention is key to preventing many health problems. I wish that I had read this book twenty years ago. I would have done many things differently. I am recommending this book to my daughter-in-law and friends that have problems with osteopenia.

This book is certainly informative, but despite the title, it is significantly incomplete. This is a starter book--giving an overview of bone related information.

If you've been diagnosed with the most common bone ailment -- osteoporosis or osteopenia, you need a book with much more practical information, especially about exercises and medication.

The section on "Therapies for Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis," starts with a lengthy discussion about medication clinical trials, standard deviation, etc, but the author only casually and very briefly mentions the side-effects often attributed to these medications.

Exercise in general is encouraged, but no specific exercises or exercise regimens are provided.

I shopped the library and found a smaller book that offers more practical information "100 Questions and Answers about Osteoporosis and Osteopenia." Full of pertinent information and suggestions. The question/answer format is supported by a good Table of Contents and thorough index so it is easy to find and refind what you need to know.
