By the end of last school year my 6-year-old was half-way through this 352 page book. It is engaging, fun, and moves at a good pace. There is a good amount of practice, but not to the point where it becomes boring. The pictures are cute and interesting without being a big distraction. The activities are varied enough to be interesting, and there are a few hands on activities as well. It is comfortably challenging for my daughter, and she always looks forward to working out of this book. She will be finishing this workbook in 2.5-3 months this school year, and when she does we will be starting The Complete Book of Math, Grades 3 - 4.
This book comes with a tear-out poster and one sheet of reward stickers. The poster is a simple addition table and while the stickers are fun, there aren't enough of them to last very long. Stickers are super cheap at dollar stores, so that's not a big deal to me. The pages are perforated so they may be ripped out, but my daughter likes to go back and look at her completed pages, so we leave most of them in. The couple pages I have ripped out, come out cleanly and fairly easily. There is no answer guide, but I really don't mind. Math has never been my strong suit, but this is only grade 1-2 and I've never felt I needed an answer key.Read more ›
I love that the pages are bright and cheery and rarely have too many problems. My son seems to truly enjoy them and never seems overwhelmed. We can do 2 or 3 double-sided sheets in one sitting.
I plan to go through the book, using only the materials we need to gain a good understanding of each concept. There will inevitably be plenty of pages leftover for review and reinforcement in the coming year.
This book (and the rest in the series) would also be great for a struggling learner than needs lots of practice. There are numerous pages for each concept.
I highly recommend this book as well as the Complete Book of Time & Money. Each are a great deal, considering you will use them for at least 2 grade levels!
