Book Description

The Enneagram—a universal symbol of human purpose and possibility—is an excellent tool for doing the hardest part of consciousness work: realizing, owning, and accepting your strengths and weaknesses. In this comprehensive handbook, Beatrice Chestnut, PhD, traces the development of the personality as it relates to the nine types of the Enneagram, the three different subtype forms each type can take, and the path each of us can take toward liberation. With her guidance, readers will learn to observe themselves, face their fears and disowned Shadow aspects, and work to manifest their highest potential.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“I am especially pleased to see Chestnut’s credible research

support for the renewal of this historic system in a postmodern

sett ing. Work of this caliber invigorates the dialogue

between science, mysticism, and psychology, streams of

thought that have become estranged.”

Helen Palmer, Author, The Enneagram: Understanding Yourself and the Others in Your Life and The Enneagram in Love and Work

The Complete Enneagram title befits this work beautifully. This work

is clear, thoughtful, comprehensive, and compelling. Examples of the

types speaking for themselves, along with the historical roots of the

Enneagram, further enrich Chestnut’s work. She artfully interweaves

theoretical and practical information and enhances this work with her

insightful psychology background. This book is a must-read.”

— David Daniels, MD, Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Stanford University, and Enneagram pioneer in the Narrative Tradition

“With the best subtype information currently available in print and an

exquisite intermixing of the psychological, spiritual, and developmental,

The Complete Enneagram more than deserves its title. Pleasurable to read

and with abundant theory and practice for both the personal and professional

arenas, I will encourage all of my clients to read it, even those who

are already Enneagram-savvy. It is solid, classic, bold, even-handed, and

original!”

5.0 out of 5 stars comprehensive, authoritative, engaging August 24, 2013
By =JK=
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Beatrice Chestnut extends the theory and application of the Enneagram of personality with this book. She builds a clear and systematic framework for understanding the 27 subtypes as the 3x3x3 natural dimension for understanding the habits of mind we call our character. She explains the Enneagram's history and esoteric context well and is well placed herself in its modern lineage to offer personal insights as a long-time student, teacher, and practicing therapist. Chestnut's personable writing style is a good match for the task as she combines extensive (and annotated) research, first-person self descriptions, psychological theory and examples from great literature. (The stops on Homer's Odyssey track the obstacles each personality type confronts in becoming more self-aware, and vivid analogies from Dante's Inferno help underscore the Shadow side of each type.) The subtype sections show how basic human instinct (self-preservation/broad social/personal one-to-one) refines the passion in each Enneagram type into three different expressions - or 27 personalities. This book is not lightweight, and experienced Enneagram students might indulge the urge to skim some of the background theory. I say, So be it. The Complete Enneagram goes the extra mile to add both depth and breadth to a harmonic system for distinguishing personality from reality. And perhaps most importantly, Chestnut explains what we can choose to know about ourselves and others when we do so.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "GPS" on Enneagram Subtypes January 7, 2014
Format:Paperback
I anxiously awaited Bea's book as hearing her speak about the subtypes in a session hosted by Ginger Lapid-Bogda was as if a veil to a treasure trove of information had been lifted. Bea's ability to explain the 27 subtypes is simply outstanding. Her writing helped me understand my own dominant subtype more as well as making it clear to me that knowing the subtypes really provides a deeper understanding of how enneatypes can show up differently in others. Bea begins with a solid foundation of the enneagram and her use of personal stories written by others provided an illumination that was invaluable. What I found to be captivating was weaving in Dante's Divine Comedy and Homer's Odyssey to bring even more insight to each type. I call this book the GPS as it is very thorough guide written by someone who has travel far and wide on her enneagram journey. Bea's gift is her willingness to share with us the best views, points of interest and how to continue on one's own development path. It is a book to keep coming back to which I have several times. Thank you Bea--your book was well worth the wait and I truly believe this is one of the top books for anyone interested in consciousness, self-insight and growth with the enneagram--the powerful nuances of the subtypes are critical for knowledge of one's self and others and this book provides keen insight in a way I have not seen before.

I've long wondered if we really need another Enneagram book as there are some outstanding books out there. Yet, Bea's book should be placed right up there with the most respected books on the Enneagram. It's excellent for beginners and for serious students and teachers, it should be required reading.

First, she offers the most comprehensive, clear view of the subtypes I've seen. Most books have a cursory paragraph on each subtype while Bea fleshes the inner world of each subtype out with elegant precision. The reader can FEEL the subjective experience of each of these subtypes. Not only does she lay out the inner dilemma of each subtype, she offers concrete inner work for each of the 27 subtypes. I was moved as I read.

There's a moment for new students in reading about their type in which they've a deep sense of being understood or seen. It's what often brings them to the study. I've been teaching the Enneagram for over 12 years and my students and I have yet to have that "aha" experience in reading about subtype descriptions. I'm happy to report that has changed. "She gets it," I thought. It's an "inside out" feeling: this author understands the central dilemma of the type and its subtype expression.

Second, she has a sense of the organic, energetic movement between the points. While our habit of mind is tenacious, the type isn't static. Yet, it isn't as much about "Four going to Two" under stress as it is about recognizing there is a dynamic, inner flow between the arrows of each of the types and Bea illuminates this well. Earlier Enneagram authors pointed towards this organic movement and Bea really fleshes out the specifics of what this means for each type.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent approach to enneagram subtypes October 27, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Chestnuts's book is the best I've read on subtypes of the nine enneagram spaces. Her work is readable, well documented and very
helpful for both professionals and armchair devotees of enneagram development according to space, subtype, and levels of integration. Her inclusion of self-revelation for each number and type seem right on target for most readers. I said "Right on'" as soon as I found myself very adequately described, and I also found helpful ways and means for transformation for my type!

Thorough coverage of the Enneagram. I could have done without the comparison to Greek literature, though. For me that just lengthened the book. Read more
