I've just self-published my first book, Why Struggle? life istoo short to wear tight shoes. I would never have considered thisoption if I didn't this treasure of a book to reference. My favorite section is the outline in the back of the book that details what to do in each phase of the process. Tom and Marilyn have created an amazing book that covers everything imaginable for self-publishers. I've only implemented some of their suggestions and I've sold over 300 books in less that two months. Because of this book,my dream has because a reality and it wasn't a painful process.

On a shelf of reference books about self-publishing, I find this volume to be not only very substantial (400+ pp) but extremely useful as a practical reference. As others have noted, however, it is in some particulars out-of-date. While the examples provided using real cost figures may be helpful, one must bear in mind that the numbers may no longer be relevant. As others have said, the authors ought to give us an updated version. There are, for instance, no index references for "digital" or "PDF," but the authors say, "There is a growing interest and activity in electronic prepress. Many manufacturers are working out the bugs. . . . " Does anyone do it any other way anymore?

No other book provides the scope and depth of coverage of this book. However, the edition I read was dated 1994, and was probably written a year earlier. Many of the references are out of date, or incomplete in that they do not provide current e-mail or website addresses -- if at all. Nor does the book take into account fully enough the revolution in the internet that has taken place since the pub. date. The Rosses owe their many admirers an update.

There is a lot of good information here, but much of this book is laughably out of date. Save your money for the next edition.

Just finished The Complete Guide to Self-Publishing and found it it be the best book out there. Am new to publishing, but cannot believe they left anything out. Just the resources alone in all the appendices make this book worthwhile, but it is jammed packed with all kinds of information from which a novice writer or even a seasoned publisher could benefit. The Rosses walk you through the entire process and then at the end give you a schedule to help you get started. If you ever plan to publish anything anywhere any time, please do yourself a favor and read this book!

This wonderful book leaves no stone unturned. I wanted to understand fully what I was getting myself into by self-publishing and found this book. That was truly my lucky day.
It's incredible how Tom and Marilyn are willing to share so much information. I am well ahead of schedule because everything I needed to know is here in this book. They don't just tell you what you should do; they also explain why, how, and when. Thank you both so very much!

With a title like that, a book better deliver; and this one does. A while ago, we decided to niche our graphic design and editing services into a book producing business. We had always produced books, but now we were in the business of helping writers publish and we realized we needed to know more about the ins and outs of publishing than we did. This was the second book we purchased on the topic -- I wish it had been the first. This book bolstered confidence and helped us with all the basics and the minute details of those basics -- publishing numbers, markets, promotion, distribution, etc. This book is so vital to the writer, we make its purchase mandatory for our clients. One caveat: as trained professional designers, we differ with the books opinion on the subject of design. We caution you regarding the advice that anyone can typeset a book with page layout software. Unless you are a typesetter or a designer, you should not attempt to do this yourself. Typesetting and design are skills that take a career to learn. And a commercially designed book is essential to the success of your book. A book that looks amatuer or homemade, may not be taken seriously by the publishing industry, and might damage your opportunity to recoup your investment. Aside from that, this is another must for the reference shelf.

After being rejected by several publishers, I decided to self publish my novel. I've had pretty good luck with it, and I've established a readership. This would not have been possible without Tom and Marilyn Ross's book. It guided me through the basic steps of self publishing. I'm not a professional publisher. I'm just a housewife with a love for writing stories. I now have a book which I can leave as a legacy to my family, and the Ross's book with its clear and easy instructions made this all a reality.
