“Bernie Clark’s The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga is one of the best yoga resources now available.”
&mdash Paul Grilley, author of Yin Yoga: Outline of a Quiet Practice

Yin Yoga is a practice much needed in today's difficult, divisive times. It offers us a way to leave behind our ideas of how we should be, and return to our true selves, where all lasting healing takes place. Bernie Clark has written a wonderfully detailed account of the history, philosophy, and practice of Yin Yoga. I recommend it not only for those interested in Yin Yoga, but for all yoga practitioners.

Bernie Clark manages to yet again capture the basics as well as the evolving nature of Yin Yoga. The blend of the philosophical and practical aspects of the practice is artful and complete. The many Yin Yoga flows are great for home practice or for use as a teaching aid. Yin for shoulders and in general, upper body is introduced. I questioned this at first having learned that Yin Yoga is meant to target mainly the lower body, the lower three chakras , but who's to say upper body can't be addressed from a Yin perspective? I have already introduced this in my classes and it has been very well received as have the wall Yin Yoga suggestions in the book.

This is THE definitive volume on Yin Yoga, recommended by both Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers.

It replaces Bernie Clark's earlier 'Yinsights' and is a huge improvement in that it has far more detail on how to go into the Yin postures.

I ordered three copies a few weeks ago and another is about to be ordered for our Yoga Teachers Association library.

Paul Grilley mentioned that he used Bernie Clark's earlier 'Yinsights' as a teacher training manual. I can't help but believe that 'The Complete Guide to Yin Yoga' will now replace 'Yinsights.'

My only small quibble is that the photographs could be better. But that does not stop this being a five-star book.

I have a creaky back and knees essentially bone on bone. This book explains a type of yoga aimed at keeping joints looser. Thus far, in several weeks, my pain level has reduced to the point that the surgeon no longer felt hyalauronic acid injections necessary. My goal is to put off knee replacement as lomg as possible so I won't need to do it twice like my father.

There is a great deal of informarion about how different cultures would interpret the reasons this works. For me that is extraneous as I am pragmatic--more interested in whether it works than why and especially not three different cultural versions of medical treatment. But I and you can easily jump past what we don't want to the poses themselves. Someone else might find those sections helpful. The book is quite well written in all areas and well illustrated, which is extremely important for asanas.

MIddle third of this text--the actual postures and contraindications--are the best intro Yin yoga out there. Period. Final third delves just deeply enough into anatomy to make the book practical for teachers and practitioners who want to konw why a particular pose works. First third will be of interest to people who need to connect their practice to Eastern health/medicine/mysticism.

This book is a culmination of Bernie Clark's research, experience and yinsights. Total in its scope of yogic philosophy, practices and why we do them and background information on the practice of yoga. If yoga is your passion, as it is mine, then this is the book for you. With its photos, anatomical drawings and references it is a must in every yoga teacher's library.

Bernie Clark has been so generous in sharing his knowledge of yin on his website yinyoga.com. this book is yet another manifestation of his generosity. I am a bit of a yo-geek. Not only do i want to embody the poses, i also want to fully understand what is going on. this book has satisfied both the experiential and the nerdy side of me. What's great is that it's written in a way that everyone can understand and appreciate. And it helps that Bernie Clark is funny, too! As a yin yoga teacher, i have used this book since it came out as a valuable resource.

Thank you, Bernie, for this wonderful contribution to this very, very, very valuable aspect of the Yoga practice!

On June 7, 2012, my 69th birthday, on a training ride for the Virginia State Age Cycling Championship I had a major bike crash, leaving me with a right broken AC joint, left ulnar nerve damage and mucho muscular damage. It has been a long recovery journey: three surgeries, physical therapy and Yin Yoga. While the physical therapy provided minimal results, I was left with contracted musculature and little ROM in the shoulders and numbness and weakness in my left pinkie. This past year I returned to my yoga class, starting in my longtime yoga teacher's(Angela Phillips) Yin yoga class. It was about holding and relaxing into poses. Best physical therapy ever! To date I have almost complete ROM in the shoulders and continue to open and heal body musculature. The bonus is new found physical source for my cycling...like 6 cylinders instead of 4!

I've only had the book for a few weeks, practicing sporadically. Already, even with my rather mediocre practice, my hips and groin are more flexible than they ever were doing hatha yoga*. Bernie's descriptions of the postures are very clear and he offers so many variations that this one book alone can be a lifelong practice. With so much progress made with comparitively little effort, I am encouraged to make Yin Yoga a regular practice. Thank you so much, Bernie!

*This is not to deride hatha yoga. I think hatha yoga is great for strength and sweat with good flexibility as well. Yin Yoga is for deep, deep flexibility and is great for those who meditate.
