Editorial Reviews

He led the most popular white vocal group of the late '50s. He was one of the first (and very few) artists to transition successfully from a group to a solo career. And his recording career is still going strong, over 50 years after he had his first solo hit. But Dion DiMucci's original Laurie singles, the very tracks that established him as a superstar solo act during the '60s, have never been collected in one place…until now. This 36-track set features all the single sides, both A and B, that Dion recorded for Laurie in their original mono single mixes, including the early singles that sparked his solo success, the sides that Laurie released after Dion signed with Columbia in 1962 (Dion was the first rock 'n' roll artist to sign with that hallowed label), and, finally, the radically different and progressive singles Dion released after his triumphant return to the Laurie label with "Abraham, Martin and John" in 1968. You'd be hard-pressed to find the original mono single mixes of any of these songs except for the big hits, and you'd also be hard-pressed to find some of these songs (e.g. the later singles and the B-sides) on CD at all. Remastered from the original tapes at Capitol Studios by Kevin Bartley with assistance from Andrew Sandoval, and featuring liner notes by compilation producer Ed Osborne that include vintage photos of Dion, shots of the original singles and an exclusive interview with the Dion himself, this 2-CD set is a must for any Dion fan or collector, and encapsulates the Laurie years of this legendary artist like no other release before or since.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a CD! OUTSTAINDING! October 16, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I'll be brief here. I bought this CD knowing it would be good; but I had no idea it would be THIS GOOD. If I could give it 10 Stars, I would.

Dion's solo music from the 60's is timeless and well recorded. This set captures the original sound of the 45's and MORE. The sound quality is rich, full and warm. So often, Not only does Dion's voice sound GREAT, the background vocals of The Del-Satins, on the sides they did with Dion, or crisp and clear. This along with the blend of the instruments makes this collection incredible. I hear people complaining about CD sound quality, well not on this collection.

It makes me want to see all of Dion's Columbia sides put out in this manner; and while they're at it, put out the sides Dion and the Belmonts did in GLORIOUS MONO!

I wouldn't mind seeing collections from other artists/groups of the 60's released in this form. The Buckinghams, Mamas and Papas, Jan and Dean, The Turtles, Paul Revere and the Raiders, not to mention anything from the Motown label, would ALL sound GREAT released in their original MONO and treated the way these songs were treated by the people who did the re mastering.

If you've always wanted to have these great songs in your collection. Buy this set.
If you already have the STEREO versions of these songs, DEFINITELY buy this set. You will NOT be disappointed at all!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars What's best...Mono or Stereo? December 10, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Although I'm a stereo lover, I know that mono done well has its appeal. Recorded right, monaural has a driving impact that's missing in stereo. So I decided to compare this 2 CD mono set, to the excellent sounding, "3C Mastersound", stereo versions released by Laurie Records in the late 80s and early 90s. I compared both versions consecutively. e.g. "Lonely Teenager" mono/stereo, "The Wanderer" mono/stereo, "Runaround Sue" mono/stereo, etc.

What did I think?

As expected, the mixes came across differently, but not too much so. Whoever did the mixing of the stereo versions, did an excellent job keeping the volume differences between the instruments, chorus, and Dion's lead vocals intact. Thus, the balance of all parts sounded exactly like the mono mix, except all spread out. That's exactly as it should be. I thought both renditions were right on sonic wise. Coming directly from the masters, they should be. As one reviewer said of the mono mixes..."the sound quality was rich, full and warm"...but then again, so were the stereo versions.

What did I prefer?

It didn't take long...there was no question to my ears...STEREOPHONIC...sounded best. It wasn't even close in my opinion. The three dimensionality and spaciousness that stereo transmits really made the songs come to life. As the stereo mixes were "right on", they made the mono versions appear boxed in and confined. I found myself preferring the stereo versions every time.

True, the mono mixes are exactly what was heard on the radio at the time, and I'm glad I have them. They fill the void of the missing original releases. I also like the way the tracks are presented in chronological, label number order. The Laurie 45 label logo reproduced on both CDs is cool, too. I'm not a mono hater. But in the future, when I want to listen to Dion's early hits, I won't deprive myself of anything... I'll be listening to the Laurie, "3C Mastersound", releases in "living" stereo!
