About the Author

Beverly Cleary is one of America's most popular authors. Born in McMinnville, Oregon, she lived on a farm in Yamhill until she was six and then moved to Portland. After college, as the children's librarian in Yakima, Washington, she was challenged to find stories for non-readers. She wrote her first book, Henry Huggins, inresponse to a boy's question, "Where are the books about kids like us?"

Mrs. Cleary's books have earned her many prestigious awards, including the Amercan Library Association's Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, presented in recognition of her lasting contribution to children's literature.

Her Dear Mr. Henshaw was awarded the 1984 John Newbery Medal, and both Ramona Quimby, Age 8 and Ramona and Her Father have been named Newbery Honor Books. In addition, her books have won more than thirty-five statewide awards based on the votes of her young readers. Her characters, including Henry Huggins, Ellen Tebbits, Otis Spofford, and Beezus and Ramona Quimby, as well as Ribsy, Socks, and Ralph S. Mouse, have delighted children for generations. Mrs. Cleary lives in coastal California.

Jacqueline Rogers has been a professional children's book illustrator for more than twenty years and has worked on nearly a hundred children's books.

I just got this set for my daughter on the premise that if she reads the first book we will see the movie. I enjoyed them
as a child so I thought she would too. She is enjoying them immensely, but what really bothers me is the pages are falling out while
she is still reading them. Most books can be read and re-read over and over, but these are the worst I have ever seen. It won't make it through even
a second reading. Cheap production that does a disservice to Ms. Cleary's stories.

We have the original illustrated collection. My 6-year old daughter and I love these books. Unlike other more contemporary series like Junie B Jones (terrible language), the characters of these books are wholesome, convincing, funny, lovable and memorable. And like all good literature, the stories and characters ring true. I am thoroughly impressed with Ms. Cleary's writing and imagination-- no wonder two of these books won the Newberry prize. These are indispensable classics.

I remember reading these books when I was young, and have shared them with my 3 daughters. Currently my 6 year old and I are reading them together. These are wonderful, laugh out loud books. They are still as relevant today as they were when I was a child. What I love about these is that Ramona is a girl like so many, who gets into trouble without meaning to. She isn't mean spirited, just impulsive like so many kids this age are. These are SO much better written than Junie B. Jones, but still have the same spirit of fun about them. Kids can just relate to Ramona and her frustrations, and you'll even find yourself enjoying them too. Highly recommended.
