Editorial Reviews

Joe Satriani: The Complete Studio Recordings is a box set worthy of one of the greatest instrumental rock guitarists of our time.

Joe Satriani is the guitar. Plain and simple. No one else has ever been able to play with such pizzazz, such fluidity, such timelessness.

Since the late eighties, the self-taught, multi-platinum virtuoso has been winning over fans and musicians alike with his groundbreaking style and legendary sounds. He has been around the world several times on tours of his own, as well as tours with Mick Jagger, Deep Purple, and hugely successful G3 summer tours and albums with fellow guitar legends Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd and as part of the supergroup, Chickenfoot. He has been both artist and teacher, instructing such famous pupils as Steve Vai, Metallica s Kirk Hammett, Counting Crows David Bryson, and jazz fusionist Charlie Hunter.

Now for the first time, all of Joe's studio albums are compiled in The Complete Studio Recordings, the most comprehensive collection by the world's best selling instrumental guitarist. 15 albums including the new compilation titled Additional Creations and Bonus Tracks. Featuring brand-new digital remasters for the best sound reproduction overseen by Joe himself, each CD is packaged in a replica cardboard jacket and housed in a clamshell box.

Pros:

The sound on these cds is phenomenal. There is a warmth and depth to them that is sadly missing from most digital recordings done today. I'd highly recommend a listening session with some quality noise cancelling headphones to truly appreciate the sound. Great care was done during the remastering process to achieve such stunning results.

Price. You can't say that fourteen full-length albums plus another disc of material isn't worth it. I love all types of music and am only a very casual fan of Joe Satriani but couldn't resist picking up this set to expand my musical knowledge.

Cons:

The packaging is weak. My guess is that it may have been done to keep the cost down. The box that the cds are housed in is sturdy but the sleeves for the cds are rather flimsy. The booklet has a nice intro from Joe but that is it. I'd prefer some background information to each album but that is sadly absent.

Overall:

So far from what I've heard, I'll be listening to this set for years to come. Money well spent in my book.

Full, warm, rich and detailed. I was worried about all the things that they could do wrong to this great music, much to my surprise they did a fantastic job. Go ahead and purchase away!

Joe is SO much more than a shredder. I have NO idea what this other guys problem is... This is THE set to get if you're a fan of Joes. If you're like me and have most of if not ALL of his music already... Then get it because of the bonus tracks! :)

I have been a large fan of Joe's guitar prowess and work for as long as I can remember. What I find most fascinating is that, while one might expect the other members of his band on solo albums to be mediocre and just a simple rhythm section, it is quite the opposite! He has incredibly skilled musicians playing with him, both at times in the background and forefront of his compositions. The drums, bass, rhythm guitar, and occasional keyboards are excellent!

The influence that Satch has had on the music world is undeniable, not to mention that some of my (and probably your!) favorite guitarists were once his students! (Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Steve Vai of, well, Steve Vai fame (and David Lee Roth, et al), Alex Skolnick of Testament, Larry LaLonde of Primus, David Bryson of Counting Crows, and more!)

If you bore easily or become disinterested listening to music (generally) without vocals, then maybe this isn't for you. However, if you enjoy incredible guitar work, stunning musical compositions, or are just looking for something fun to try out, I'd strongly suggest this set!

As for the set itself, the sleeves are all cardstock and housed in a clamshell case. If you expect to be removing/replacing the discs in their sleeves often, I'd suggest that you get plastic inner sleeves or something to protect them. While I haven't had this problem, many other (overly grumpy) reviewers on box sets of similar make have complained that their discs get scratched.

So what are you waiting for?!?! Get this set and go surfing with the alien!

Phenomenal remastering. The audio quality is stunning. The early albums have particularly benefitted from the digital massaging. Perfectly balanced from song to song and album to album. The fact that it's all the studio recordings is just pure gravy. If you're a Satriani fan this is the definitive collection and a must-own. My only complaint is the thin cardboard jackets for each CD and the cardboard box it all comes in. Probably Eco-friendly but not the most durable...

Although I have known of him for years, I only recently started listening to him. So the timing was perfect to buy all of his work at once. As you can imagine with this volume of work, not everything is a gem and some is more experimental than I would like, but there are a lot of really good and listenable songs here for instrumental guitar music. There is a huge amount of variety and naturally not everything will be to everyone's taste. Maybe fewer than ten tracks have vocals. I assume it is sung by Joe and his vocals are unremarkable but he doesn't suck. In my opinion, Joe's music seems more melodic and listenable than the blazing virtuosity of Steve Vai. I give it five stars because for what you are paying, there is a lot of great music. For me, it was totally worth it and I am glad he released all of his worked in a single boxed set.

Will they release the additional creations separately?
man, i sure do hope so, but i think i read that the cd's with the b-sides are exclusive to this set....i'm like you though, i already have all of his regular studio albums, so to buy this just for those b-sides seems a bit excessive...if i could find someone to buy all my other copies of the cd's... Read More
