Book Description

Gryphon Series Book 1

All 18-year-old Celeste Garrett wants is to head off to college and make those fun, yet ill-advised, choices college kids are known for. And maybe to spend some time with the hot cameraman she just met. Instead, because of a pact her ancestors made in the 17th century with a mythical creature, she has to save the world.

While normal kids are slamming energy drinks and cramming for exams, Celeste will get her adrenaline rush fighting a fire breathing dragon. She wants to meet friends in the quad to exchange lecture notes, but first she must exchange blows with a shapeshifting demon on the rooftop. Life isn’t always fair for a superhero, but at least she doesn’t have to do it alone. With her brother and sister as sidekicks, they alternate between saving lives and getting on each others’ nerves. Together the trio encounters unspeakable odds, mystical forces and comes face-to-face with an image that will haunt them forever—their grandmother in a leopard print bikini.

"Okay, little side note here. If a psychopathic killer asks if you want to see a trick, say no. That’s the smart thing to do. I, on the other hand, responded, 'Bring it'."

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous YA Book for Adults & Teens March 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
When fellow author, Stacey Rourke, posted on Facebook she was looking for reviewers for her recently published YA novel, The Conduit, I couldn't resist. She had been tweeting and posting messages on Facebook about her book for the few weeks approaching its release, and it looked pretty interesting. The timing for me was perfect: I had just finished a YA book I had really enjoyed reading and was in the mood to keep the momentum going.

Talk about momentum! The Conduit is full of mystery and is action packed. At one point, I found myself completely visualizing this book on the big screen, something I do not do very often.

The story begins with three siblings travelling to Georgia to stay with their Grandmother after a series of break-ins in their hometown spooks their mother. When Celeste, the middle child, notices a glowing bird in her grandmother's yard, her curiosity gets the best of her. We quickly learn that Celeste and her siblings were chosen by their ancestors to fight off evil spirits. With their new mystical super hero powers, they set off to save the world.

Stacey Rourke is an expert storyteller, keeping me interested and engaged through the entire book. (I may or may not have lost track of time while reading this book last night while I was supposed to be cooking dinner for my family ... sorry about the leftovers kids!) There was just no way I could put this story down. The last chapter was so well written, but I have to say that the best part of the book came during the epilogue. Let's just say, I'm glad I wasn't alone in a dark house when I read it... serious c-r-e-e-p-y factor (in a good way) and completely unexpected!

I can't wait for the next book in this series! I think my teens will love this book as much as I did.

P.S. This book also has my new all time favorite line in it: "I bet Robin never made Batman stop for chips."

3.0 out of 5 stars An Honest Review of the Conduit April 14, 2012
I've just finished The Conduit, the main character Celeste has become one of my new favorites in YA literature. She's got a great sense of humor, which I feel in a way matches my own (even though I have passed my expiration date as a young adult). The book also had some fantastic one-liners that at times, I found myself secretly wishing I had half the mind to say in any intelligent conversation.

I do agree whole-heart-idly with another reviewer of this book in the following areas:

"Abundant grammar errors"
"Telling vs. Showing"
"Unnecessary use of caps and alternate fonts"
"Some comments didn't fit the characters" - I too struggled with the witty/hip grandmother... an example:her epilogue response to the three siblings being super-human and reading up on defense tactics.

Overall, I did enjoy reading the story, and look forward to the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Batman had it easy... August 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have held off reading this book for selfish reasons. Miss Rourke is notorious for her cliffhangers, and I refused to start one without the end of the serious in sight. Glad I did! There is no way that after reading The Conduit that you will not read Embrace and then be on the edge of your seat for Sacrifice and her novella The Sidekick Chronicles! I am hooked! Celeste is a perfect mix of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Juno! Kendal is the bubbly, fashionesta we all love but secretly hate for making us feel even more unfashionable and awkward, and Gabe well I maybe in love with Gabe, huba huba!
The Conduit has a unique and imaginative premise that is so rare in YA fiction as of late. This book is unlike any other I have read in the genre. The cast of characters and supporting characters is fantastic and well developed. I was able to develop a relationship with each unique character and appreciate the quirks and wit that made these characters so lovable. Stacey Rourke has a gift for humor, and if you like to laugh while you're vicariously fighting demons and the minions of Hell read this book! No really, I'm serious, read this book! Stop playing, buy it NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Conduit--A Must Read for All Ages July 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I LOVE this book! It's similar to a mix between The Hunger Games and Harry Potter. It is HILARIOUS--I couldn't stop laughing! I feel that through her amazing talents, author Stacey Rourke has made it so every person who reads the book can easily connect to and feel the many emotions of the leading characters.
It isn't restricted to just adults, either! It's a wonderful teen book, as well as pre-teens and young adults! Five-stars all around!

4.0 out of 5 stars A great read! January 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Ok so I have never read any of her stuff before and thought what the heck I'll read this... Umm, I loved this book I don't know why I didn't pick it up earlier!!! the story is about 3 siblings (Gabe,Celeste, and Keni) but these are no ordenary siblings see they have been pledged centuries ago to the Gryphon. These 3 have seprate abilities Gabe is a lion, Keni can fly and celesete is the conduit..with the help of Alaina thier guide they sent out to learn and master their abilities and prepair for the battle with Barnabus and his evil army set to destory them... Lots of funny momment's thank's to Keni, but this is a story of how a family bands together and get's what needs done, done... if you have never read any of her books pick this up and take a few min and read will not dissapoint you.

2.0 out of 5 stars Predictable fanasty
This was not science fiction. I do not usually like fantasy and this is pure fantasy fiction. I gave up after three chapters.

There was a lot of action, but it still felt boring -- probably because I didn't feel connected to any of the characters. You're about to get bitten in half by a dragon? Ok cool. Read more

Not the best. If I was a teenager I probably would like it more. Too much young girl angst.
