This book is a great resource. I would definitely recommend anyone interested in saltwater aquariums buy this book. One word of warning though, buy the newest edition, as there are important updates that could effect the success of your aquarium.

With a brief history of the hobby to a simple, concise breakdown of the nitrogen cycle, this book is a must have for anyone involved in or considering marine husbandry.
The reviews of species you might consider as additions to your biotope are both in-depth and concise. They stay away from "Don't you dare try to keep this..." and lean more towards "If you're going to try this, here's what you're getting in to with life form such and such, so please make an educated decision."
I've had the book for a day, and have already gleaned a wealth of knowledge. I sincerely look forward to everything else I can get from this book and can't recommend it highly enough.

I saw this book as one of the most highly listed books on Amazon, and was a little hesitant at first. I mean a list price of 70 dollars? Thats a bunch for a non-textbook kind of book. So I saw it in the local book store and I saw why it is so much- its HUGE and hardcover, and wow are there a ton of pics! So, I came home and ordered it, and have been reading this book straight through for about a week now and just finished it.

Did I mention that this book is HUGE?? Its the most in-depth marine book I've read so far- and very very well written. Don't let the title fool you- this isn't some hippy-dippy lets save the environment book- although the author does mention ways you can be a smart consumer like stay away from cyanide poisoned fishes. Its mostly, heres the deal with marine tanks and how to keep them alive and well. I would recommend this book for saltwater newbies and old salts alike- I am definitely proud to have this book on my shelf and I'm sure will come back to reference it for years to come.

Now, you probably don't have to read this book cover-to-cover as I did, as it has separate chapters for setting up tanks, care, and chapters on specific fish and inverts. I read it through because, well, I'm a nerd, and I love learning about new things.

All and all, if there was one book for a saltwater fishkeeper to invest their money into, this book would be it. Also, it is a great companion with the New Marine Aquarium book.

I have been keeping a marine tank for less than 1 year. I got tired of just using the internet for all my knowledge-base of marine aquariums; spending many hours digging through all the forums for whatever current problem/issue i had, reading so many conflicting opinions and answers from 'experts', and often ending up at least as confused as when i began.

So I bought this book, read it, and feel much better equipped for the hobby. I still refer heavily to internet sources for more granular knowledge, but at least I now have a solid, reliable source for a foundation on which to build.

This book gave me more confidence, and left me eager to learn and do more in this hobby. It is beautifully illustrated, well composed, and the author conveys his own passion of the hobby and eagerness to educate responsible marine hobbyists.

I would recommend this book to anyone who will set up a saltwater aquarium. It is the best book ever on marine aquariums! It covers everything you will need to know in great detail, from feeding and health to filter choices and tank setup. It is a slightly expensive book and I wasn't sure whether I should buy it or not, but I can assure you it was worth every penny! It is quite literally the marine aquarists bible!

I am new to the hobby and have purchased several books on saltwater, this book is awesome! The author is very thorough on the subject matter and I'm sure it'll be my ultimate reference as I delve into the wonderful world of marine life. I cannot say enough about this meritorious book! I highly reccomend this book.

I usually don't comment on things, but this is one of the better books geared towards beginning hobbiests. On the whole, well written and easy to follow, a must read if you plan on starting a marine aquarium. I've been involed with the hobby for the better part of my life and still took may things way from it.

PROS:

- I like how it shows a 55 gallon in 3 setups: FISH ONLY, FOWLR, REEF.
- Cites most expensive costs are consumables like water, frozen food, selcon additive, electric.
- Cites wide/shallow tanks are better than tall/narrow tanks.

CONS:

- Doesn't compare LED lights to flourescent. I was looking for an answer as to how much LED is needed be equivalent to a flourescent light that I currently have.
- Why waste pages about underground filters and in-tank box filters when noone uses it anymore? This is not a 1970s book!
- I disagree that Heniochus and long-nose butterfly are hardy fish...maybe they are if they were in a tank where no other fish bothers them.
- I only found the first 83 pages useful out of a 425 pages book.
- Does not mention inline heaters.
====================

I recommend the book "The Marine Reef Aquarium" as the better book.

I am an experienced marine aquarium hobbyist of some 10 years. I found this book to be fantastic. I have learned many new tricks. The author is also big into conservation and gives tips on how to avoid endangered or improperly gathered animals. I'm very satisfied with this purchase.

Excellent book for very basic information. Becoming dated in some areas (lighting for example) and offers too general a data base for both coral and marine fishes. Good for beginners but incomplete for intermediate and above aquarists.
