Stumbled across this on the bookshelves of the Odjo d'Água Hotel in Sal, Cape Verde. It turned out to be a better than average escapist novel in its World War II thriller category. It's good hotel and airplane reading. I shouldn't reveal too much of the plot, but basically it's World War II and the Nazis and the Allies are after a mysterious killing agent that could change the course of the war. Submarine battles, nasty killings in neutral European cities, drama in Hagia Sophia, betrayals, double agents, etc. It's not on the level of Alan Furst, but those who enjoy Furst will probably enjoy "The Constantine Convenant" while lying on the beach or sitting on an airplane.

I bought this book the day it came out, and read it in a few days. I always look forward to this author's works. Not only does he tell a good story with believable characters, his research is excellent. I love WWII thrillers, and hope he writes more. I also highly recommend his novel "Sink the Shigure"

This book is action packed and hard to put down. Very entertaining, but a bunch of plot holes bothered me, and part of the ending bothered me.

Spoiler alert...

The biggest plot hole was that the supposed super powerful secret weapon (essentially an ancient biological agent, supposedly originating from God himself) didn't seem to be used much at all by it's various possessors throughout the ages. First the cult of "Anok Sabe" (who obtained samples of the virus from the pestilence that wiped out the Assyrians during their seige of Jerusalem) did not use it when the Romans were persecuting them and wiped out their cult. Then the Byzantines didn't use it when their empire was threatened and eventually taken over by the Ottomans.

No real explanation given in the book why the secret weapon wasn't used by above to defend themselves against their enemies.

There are some other minor plot holes when the story moves on to the 20th century (WWII). But since they were minor, I won't really bother discussing them here.

The last part that bothered my was the gratuitous and unnecessary excess of violence during the ending when the U-boat controlled by the main characters rammed the Japanese sub. Ramming it was enough to stop it, the only things left to do from there was to find and eliminate the main "bad guy" (really a girl in disguise) and destroy all trace of the secret weapon. I have no idea at all whatsoever why the author made the main character sink the Japanese sub with all hands (by taking over the bridge and using the controls to fill up its ballasts with water). Yes this is a violent novel and and hardcore action novel.
