I've read a hundred memoirs, and even taught a class on memoir/autobiography, but Jose Chaves has written the only memoir that has ever kicked my ass. The perfect blend of profound humor, sadness, and hope. The memoir examines Jose's relationship with his larger than life father, Hernando, who grew up in a poor barrio in Bogata, won a lottery, and eventually made his way to Seattle to become a Civil Engineer. Hernando's immense gravity spins the entire family around him in hilarious and utterly tragic ways. But the memoir is much more than a father/son exploration. It deals with race, class, and the three demons of addiction, abuse, and abandonment. Ultimately, the memoir shows how it takes one person with enough verraquera (guts, chutzpah) to break the cycle of inherited family dysfunction and addiction, and provide hope for the next generations. By the end, I was knocked the hell out.

During Hernando's frequent but often distructive influence as the "Cinderella Parent", he so often left chaos in his wake. Tom, the man who made mistakes and learned from them and created personal positive life changes, was the father figure to emulate. Parenting at best is difficult, but the parent who has a constant presence and attempts to be honest is the constant in a life. I loved the honesty with which this book is written and highly recommend it.

This was a '2-by-2' book for me. Reading two nights in a row, too late into the night! Jose's candid exploration of himself, his struggles, his family, and particularly his relationship with his irrepressible Colombian father, is a bittersweet dessert to savor! I'll have seconds, please?

I had no idea what this book was about, I started reading a sample, and had to buy it right then. Once I started reading it, I wished it wouldn't have to end. The writing was touching and beautiful. I laughed, and I cried, my boyfriend and I decided to read this book at the same time, and share what we read each day. We are still remembering lines from the book, and laughing at some of the funny situations. This book will stay with me for a long time, I will definitly recommend it to friends.

Richer for having read this. An exploration of human experience with all of the the layers intact; from joy, to pain, confusion, to aspiration, dysfunction, to sweetness, sadness, to love, hope, to fulfillment, and everything in between - all interwoven together with an honesty that is as raw as it is engaging.

The author takes us on his journey through it all, peeling through the layers of his own pain to find something real and beautiful. The characters and experiences flow easily from the pages for an engrossing and thought provoking read.

I find myself reflecting on how rare it is that we are able to strip away the expectations, perceptions, hurts, and disappointments we all have and carry around related to our experiences as sons or daughters of parents, all derived from real or perceived childhood dependencies and needs - to be able to actually SEE the people that are our parents, in their own context, as the human beings that they are. It is indeed interesting to think about.

Thanks for a cool book.

I am in awe of this book. I have never read anything written from a place so close to the heart. It's an astonishing accomplishment. It is an incredible story of a father and his son, the damage done and the love that remains. In the end it is about love and how it is done in real families. Most of all it's a great read. You just can't leave the story until you've seen the characters through. Viva Chaves!

Unlike most memoirs, The Contract of Love is both entertaining and artistically crafted. Humor and tenderness can be found in every chapter, but a quiet wisdom runs throughout the entire book. Chaves is a beautiful writer.

You get lines like--
Her perfume is like sunshine on a tangerine. [And]
Her breath smells like a porkchop in an ashtray.
But also lines like--
I'm just thankful for an hour of escape into a world that doesn't look anything like my own. [and]
Then I stare out the window, wondering if love is nothing more than trying to close the distance between a word and a
feeling. [and]
Her voice is the same self-assured voice of perfection I've hated listening to my entire life, a voice I can now recognize
as that of a child raised by two sober parents. [and]
I'm writing this story about an actor who goes onstage and forgets who his character is--not just in the play, but in real life
too.
At times sweet, at times sad, Joey’s account of his relationship with his Colombian father leaves you feeling richer for having read it.

Thank you Jose for your honesty, humor, creativity and Love. For having the courage to dig deep, face your deepest hell, and serve it up in the form of gemstones for humanity. Gracias!
