This book is the first one of its kind and must read! It indeed provides a wonderful introduction to the world of startups! It is well written, right to the point and entertaining. It describes not only the individual startups but explains the processes all startups go through to make them successful. The selection of the startups in the book spans many industries, its current and therefore gives the reader a great opportunity to open the eyes to the technological advencements created daily by the founders and visioneries that run those startup companies. The book is very easy to understand, its witty as well as it is well researched by the author. I recommend it to anybody who wants to see how the technology world will impact each and every one of us now and in the very near future, and it is a great tool for graduating university students to reasearch possibilities for employment and/or intership. I also would recommend the book for enterpreners, investors, business people and young and old alike to get the first hand knowledge of the most current technology. I recommend this book and give it a 5 stars!!!It can make a great gift!
Coolest Startups is the first hard-cover startup catalog. The language is witty, the puns are fun, and the graphics are neat. For the outsider, it's a fantastic book, showcasing some of the most interesting startups in the US (plus three from outside the US).
If you are actually in the startup scene, you'll notice that the book is superficial in parts. The most glaring error I found was about Bespoke Innovations - they don't do prosthetic legs; instead the do only covers for prosthetic limbs. This should have been obvious to the author, who marvels at one point in Chapter 65 that the cost is only a few hundred dollars. This is a completely unrealistic price point for a prosthesis, and in fact Bespoke's website lists prices around $3000.
Other than that, the book is a quick and useful read, and you may fund out about a few useful startups you hadn't heard before: TaskRabbit, RentAStudent, Second Market, Axial Market, askSunday etc. Recommended.
This is really a very creatively written book, and is extremely informative without being 'heavy'. From the first word to the last, the author's enthusiasm and sincerity come through very clearly. I seldom, if ever, write a review but a book like this, and a young author like her, are too compelling. Highly recommended for anyone who has even the remotest interest in understanding start-ups -- from an unique angle.
