I'm usually not a fan of these kinds of books, but I gave it a shot at the recommendation of a friend. I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the suspenseful plot and gruesome scenes thoroughly, but the characters were what I cherished.

The characters are compelling. Consider the main character, Janelle. She is forced to go on assignment to Upstate New York as an FBI agent with an ex-boyfriend, while struggling with drug use. Her struggle evolves through the story as she tries to beat her demons, work around other bureaucrats, and beat the killer. She is aware of her own flaws.

You are treated to many character's perspectives, including the serial killer. The serial killer's insanity is especially discomforting, as the author makes him so relatable.

If you are looking for a classic, I'm not sure that this is it. If you're looking for enlightenment or nirvana, you need to look elsewhere. Still, it's a great read encompassing personal struggles that keeps you hooked as these murders unfold. While knowledge of the Bible is not required to read this book, you will appreciate this novel more if you have knowledge of it.

As a huge fan of Criminal Minds and the like, I was immediately drawn into The Coppersmith, and the multi-layered plot and tension held throughout. Mr. Scott handled the shifts in POV cleanly, especially when taking us into the killer's twisted perspective. His heroine was humanly believable, and there was not a "happily ever after" ending. This is an author I will be watching. Bravo!

Kept me rivetted until the last page; almost could not turn the pages fast enough. I was actually disappointed when in finished in a way. It was so well written and researched. One of the best books I hve read for a while, loved the mystery, the character development and the writing style.

Janelle Becker, an FBI agent in the Behavioral Analysis Unit, is sent to upstate New York to work on a puzzling case. Someone is killing church pastors in seemingly random locations. The media is calling the killer the "Fundy Bundy" (with "fundy" short for "fundamentalist"). But the investigators soon find that a more precise nickname might be the "Ebionite Exterminator", since this killer has a strong antipathy to the writings of the apostle Paul.

Trying to decipher the killer's obscure motives leads Janelle to reconnect with her uncle, who is a pastor in Rome, New York, and to start digging into the Bible for clues. She and her fellow investigators are challenged to confront their assumptions about the Bible and religion.

Fans of "Criminal Minds" may want to check out this ingenious serial killer story while they wait for a new season to begin. Even Spencer Reid would be stretched by this case.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Coppersmith, very well written, page-turning thriller. One of the better ones I've read in quite a while.
