I'm usually not a fan of these kinds of books, but I gave it a shot at the recommendation of a friend. I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the suspenseful plot and gruesome scenes thoroughly, but the characters were what I cherished.
The characters are compelling. Consider the main character, Janelle. She is forced to go on assignment to Upstate New York as an FBI agent with an ex-boyfriend, while struggling with drug use. Her struggle evolves through the story as she tries to beat her demons, work around other bureaucrats, and beat the killer. She is aware of her own flaws.
You are treated to many character's perspectives, including the serial killer. The serial killer's insanity is especially discomforting, as the author makes him so relatable.
If you are looking for a classic, I'm not sure that this is it. If you're looking for enlightenment or nirvana, you need to look elsewhere. Still, it's a great read encompassing personal struggles that keeps you hooked as these murders unfold. While knowledge of the Bible is not required to read this book, you will appreciate this novel more if you have knowledge of it.
