Editorial Reviews

During a male-bonding weekend in the country, five friends hung up on the downfalls of reaching middle age discover a spectral corridor in the woods. When they venture to enter it, they each experience a series of terrifying changes. Now what was once a close-knit group of longtime friends is shockingly ripped apart by newfound fear and betrayal. And what should have been a relaxing weekend getaway has turned into a dangerous battle from which no one will emerge unscathed.

4.0 out of 5 stars ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS August 20, 2012
Format:DVD
The film opens with a ransacked home. Tyler(Stephen Chambers) has a knife and a cut on his cheek. His mother is lying dead in the hallway. Tyler hallucinates, hears voices, and sees images in the fuzz on the TV screen. His friends, who rescue him get attacked in the process.

After some time has passed and the credits (accompanied by folk music to give us that homey feel), Tyler and his 4 friends spend some time at a snowy A frame in the woods. The movie moves slow as we hear the mundane conversations used to establish character. Tyler is still struggling but is functional with medication being recently released from a mental health hospital. The guys drink, ride snowmobiles, watch recorded football games as Tyler scatters his mother's ashes.

Evan (James Gilbert) likes to smoke and drink. He is bored with the events and is the group's mild antagonist. Tyler has discovered a "corridor" and brings along the guys to verify its existence. The "corridor" looks fluid and it blocks out the weather. The snowmobile doesn't work in it and Tyler must be there for the corridor to appear. The fearless men decide they want to explore.

The movie now shifts into weird as clues are dropped as to the nature of the corridor. The film was low budget, but effective. Perhaps it should be categorized as a sci-fi horror thriller, depending on how one views the corridor. The characters could have been written better to make the filler time more interesting. But it is Canadian. If you liked this one, check out "Yellow Brick Road."

F-bomb, brief sex, blood, violence, no nudity

5.0 out of 5 stars Indie Horror/Sci-Fi at its best. July 30, 2012
Format:DVD
I reviewed and programmed this movie last year where it was an official selection of the Nightmare Division of the Tulsa International Film Festival. I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical from the synopsis - "5 guys in a solitary cabin for a weekend" - sounded like everything that everyone is trying to make these days. But the beginning of this movie grabs you by the throat and then quickly establishes some fine characters. The story takes on science fiction aspects very well creating intrigue and paranoia, while horror aspects maintain solid footing with the realistic gore on the screen as well as the horror the aesthetics plant in the mind. All five actors did a tremendous job with one winning the "Best Actor Award" at the Tulsa IFF over some other well known actors. The story in intelligently written, production quality is very good (much better than most indie movies we review), and the director has done a fantastic job. While I gave this 5 stars, I don't much hold to the concept of perfection and would give this 4.5 stars if I could, but since I can't, 4 stars would seem to me to be an injustice to a film this good. I will follow this director's career, and for those of you searching for hidden horror gems, add this one to your collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Long Walk. February 19, 2013
Format:DVD
The Corridor (Evan Kelly, 2010)

The Corridor is one of the most divisive movies I've ever seen. There is a small number of people who love it, and those who do really love it. And then there are the masses, who find it hateful. It's tempting to say that those who love it were the people who "got it" and those who didn't etc., and I think there is some of that, but I don't think that's completely it--I think some people who got it didn't realize they got it, and if they had, they would have said "wait, that's it?" This is, obviously, to the movie's detriment, but perhaps not as much as it should be--it's attempting to bend minds, and some minds just aren't built for being bent.

Plot: five high school friends--Tyler (Casino Jack's Stepen Chambers), Everett (Saw VI's James Gilbert), Chris (Ambulance Girl's David Patrick Flemming), Bobcat (Outlander's Matthew Amyotte), and Huggs (Hobo with a Shotgun's Glen Matthews)--get together for a memorial service for Tyler's mother after he is released from a mental institution (we see why he was put there in the opening scene). Tyler believes that, thanks to a lot of therapy and even more medication, he is back in touch with reality, but while he is out in the woods at night, he finds himself experiencing something that seems, well, crazy--he believes he's in an invisible box that allows him superhuman abilities. He doubts his sanity--until the others also start experiencing it in the same spot. The problem is, them experiencing it and Tyler being crazy may not be mutually exclusive...

I've been reading the IMDB boards for this one, and a lot of people are saying it makes no sense, while others are saying you need to pay attention to every second of the movie in order to get it. Really?

If your interested in a movie that will leave you desperate to try and piece together an explanation and reasoning behind what you just watched this is that movie. Think Momento and The Cube mixed together add in a strange anti-climatic ending with very few clues to pull from and you have this movie. Good acting but it was tough to follow and the ending made no sense. Strange. Very strange.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent SciFi/Horror film... September 9, 2012
Format:Amazon Instant Video
The Corridor is a decent SciFi/Horror film. A group of friends decide to have a guys weekend in an isolated forest where they find a corridor with supernatural powers; they're slowly consumed by it, leading them to commit many evil actions. That's a very brief overview of the story, though, it's more complicated than that. I actually felt a little lost because the storytelling was a little messy. The ending was also confusing and was not explained well. This film leaves many unanswered questions, which can often work for a film, but I think it works against it in this case. But it's not all bad, though. I thought the movie was shot beautifully and the music was great. The acting was also fine. The first half of the film was a little slow but engaging at the same time, the second half picks up the pace and changes the mood of the film a bit. There are some scenes that are completely unexpected (minor spoiler: a vivid scalping scene), so it has some surprises as well.

Overall, it's a good film. Not bad, but not amazing either. Fans of the genre will probably enjoy it the most. As of 9/9/12, this film is available on Netflix Streaming.

The Corridor has strong violence and blood, and a brief sex scene (no nudity).
