Sung a capella in beautiful harmony, these ladies bring you a lovely version of this old traditional carol. The voices have a slightly youthful quality yet maintains the feeling that you have just walked through a medieval abbey. The only version I like better than this one is the one with Eileen Farrell's beautiful operatic voice. This is one of my favorite Christmas Carols. I am overjoyed to have both in my collection now. I don't think anyone could have too many versions of this particular carol. It is truly exquisite. If you like Classical and/or medieval music, you MUST have this one. And, it's free!

...the production quality of this album leaves much to be desired. With a cappella music, a sound engineer needs to sort out his miking, EQ, and clarity to the Nth degree and suppress all ambient sizzle. The highly detectable sizzles and pops on this album detract from an otherwise flawless performance. Had this album been more attentively scrutinized by the artists and the production engineer, I would have been delighted to endorse it with five stars rather than four: the musicality of Mediaeval Baebes deserves nothing less than a perfect recording.

Beautiful Harmony,

I have to admit I'm actually completely unfamiliar with the traditional carol, so this version is my first introduction. It is hauntingly beautiful. Multiple female vocalists singing in a style that is reminiscent, to me, of gregorian chants.

One of my favorite Christmas songs of all time. They did it justice with a full orchestral sound that really fits the holiday mood.

Acapella all female singers harmonize beautifully in this carol. If you are a fan of Celtic Woman or Enya you'll enjoy this music. The other songs on this CD show the range of styles that this group sings. A very enjoyable diversion from the normal Christmas fare.

Wow, beautiful harmonizations. I usually am more of a fan of male a cappella choirs, but this was really beautiful. Makes me wish I was in a choir. I am off to see how much the album is (that is, if it's all a cappella).

A lovely carol. Puts me in the mood for cinnamon and apple spiced coffee! Strangely comforting.

Yes, they can harmonize and it's not a bad version, but if you want THE BEST and most haunting version, there is only one choice, and that is Alison Moyet's.....

Odd vocalization,

Their voices are fine enough, but they end certain lines sharply and abruptly and thus lessen the beauty of this classic carol (at least for me). It's odd vocalization, and I'm sure I could describe it better if I listened more. It's free though and you may as well download it and form your own opinion.
I recommend Loreena McKennitt's "Coventry Carol" above this one. |
