I bought this book after getting reacquainted with western dinnerware, specificially Wallace China's Rodeo and Boots & Saddles series. I'd seen them in restaurants when my parents took me on vacation in the West in the 1950s and now I was rediscovering them through online auctions.
The plates, cups, saucers, bowls and platters are ringed with cattle brands and I turned to Amazon.com for a reference book to help me with this distinctively American form of communication.
The language of brands - and it is a language or sorts - is simple and follows logical rules, clearly laid out in The Cowboy's Own Brand Book. It's an easy read and a quick introduction to something that's part of our heritage.

I would describe "The Cowboy's Own Brand Book" as a booklet. It is 44 pages in length. However, it is very well written and describes very accurately how to read an American cattle brand. It has workbook sections where you can draw brands and see if you have comprehended the material presented. It feels like this book was written by an elementary school teacher. It is simple to read, tests you on material presented, and accomplishes the task of "How do you read a cattle brand?" This would be an excellent text or reference for any school teacher who wanted to do a unit on this topic. It does not give much information about famous brands, or link historical figures to the brands they used, but for teaching you how to read a brand, it is excellent and simple.
